CA. and the Carolina Gamecocks Wednesday night were amused by the remarks that the Mexicans made to themselves while playing. Numerous times they yelled to one another in Spanish and then dribbled or passed their way to a goal. But the most amusing part of their visit took place in an informal chat with three of them after the game. One of the trio spoke very good English. He said he had studied our language two years at the University of Mexico. The other two sat with blank expressions on their faces-about like donkeys eating cactus-when the conversation was car ried on in English. Since only one of the three could speak English it was difficult to understand the other two. Having taken about all the Spanish that is offered at the University, I triedl to speak to them in their native tongue. After a fewv sentences, the one who understood English said he would translate the conversation. The first quality I noticed in them wvas their politeness on all occasions. Every time someone left the table, all three were on their feet simultaneously. Each gave a little bow-one characteristic of an European count-and then sat down again. Since they were athletes, the conversa tion naturally drifted in that direction. Mexicans play all the games we do, ex cept, of course, ice hockey, skiing, etc. They are especially fond of polo, and devote many hours each day to practic ing the game. The trio was surprised to learn that Jack Lyons, our 150 pound half-back, was captain of next year's football team. They said they thought a man should weigh at least 200 pounds in order to come out for football in America. "Our school is perhaps the cheapest one in North America," one of the three said. "Registration fees amount to $150 in1 our hnoney-that is about $35 in your cur rency--andi room and board is very cheap. We have about 20,000 students at the University. If you are in any way ath letically inclined, a scholarship will be provided which will send you through school ." The largest of the three probably Weighed 140 pounds. He announced that he was captain of the football team for the next season. ."There is more interest in rugby than in football in Mexico. To play the game one must be in good physical condition and must be hard like a rock. You have seen moving pictures of the game, so I Will not describe bow it is played. We have some very good swimmers in Mexi Co. All the students swim at least twice a week in the University's pool." The basketball team from Mexico is nlow making a tour of the United States. They have been all through the middle West and north, and are now working their way back to their native land. They Played in Alabama last night and will Play in Mississippi tonight.
