Bird Gindern At Indo< Petitt Shines In Hurdles Fast Company Included Carolina Ace Places In Bout Witt Former World Champion From Georgia Basil Pettit, one of Carolina's cracl hurdlers, succeeded in tying for third place in the 50 yard high hurdles in the Charlotte Junior Chamber of Coi merce indoor track meet held last Mon day night in the Armory Auditorium Considering the fact that such star: as Forrest Towns of the University of Georgia, world record holder it the 50 yard hurdle event, were run ning in the meet, Pettit is due muc credit for placing in the finals. George F.pps, Carolina sprint ace placed fourth in the finals of the 5( yard dash. In the 50 yard high hurdles, Town: of the University of Georgia took firs place.. Shule of Washington and Lee second; and Pettit of the Universit) of South Carolina and Arnold o Washington and Lee tied for third. In the 50 yard dash, Hopkins o Virginia and Packard of Georgia tie( for first place; Ritter of Duke place< third; and F.pps of the University o South Carolina placed fourth. Those from Carolina who entere< the longer runs did not have tim enough to get into shape for the nce and were thus unable to offer theii best performances. Attending the meet from the Uni versity were Athletic Director Wim II. Harth, Coach Don McCallister Track Coach Frank Pauly, and Assis tant Track Coach IHahn. Mr. lartl and the coaches found the meet ver interesting and enjoyable, and ar( proud of Carolina's showing in the meet, considering the fact that soni of the south's best track stars were it competition. -U .0. Progress of the squad has been greatly ham pered due to the fact that several t of the men, including Captain Bob1) r Johnson, have been unable to report t 1being out for other sports at this t time. Coach McCallister has divided the squad into two teams. Team A at pres ent is composed of: Myers and Ur ban, ends, Gaffney and Doerflinger, tackles, Bretz and Hinchman, guards, t Kiss, center, L Durham or Dearth. i quarterback, I',. These teams are continually chang ing, players running with one team - one day and the other on the next (lay. There is no clear indication as to what will be the lineup of the jeam that will take the field this fall for Carolina. The squad is excused from prac tice on Mondays and Wednesdays but are required to report for study, us ually at room No. 3, Davis College.
