FRirds State Defeats Fighting Birds In Thrilling Batt1F Derrenbacher And Farnum Ris To New Heights In Great Defensive Game Playing with a horseshoe around their necks but with a lack of weighl and reserves, the Gamecocks of the University of 'South Carolina were defeated by N. C. State 14 to 0 at the local stadium Saturday afternoon in at Southern conference game. The fast charging line for State caught the bird runners before they could get into motion and the total loss of 31 yards constituted Carolina's yardage on rushes. State's first touchdown came in the second quarter following an 80 yard unbroken drive down the field. Six consecutive first downs were made in this march. The drive was. culmi nated by a 12 yard pass near the goal line. The third period was marked by many fumbles and lucky breaks for Carolina. The final quarter saw the Wolfpack drive 54 yards for their sec ond and last marker of the day. Ed Berlinski smashed the line for the touchdown. Both extra points were made by the unerring toe of Helms, star kicker for North Carolina State's Wolfpack. The ragged tackling of Carolina was somewhat offset by the play of Ossie Bramlett and Paul Robelot, star tackles, and Ernest Stokes, center. Paul Gaffney, all-state player last year, played his usual crack game at guard. "Cowboy" Robinson and Ed Berlin ski, star backs for State who had been widely praised, lived tip to their repu tations in this tilt. Berlinski, besides making one of State's touchdowns, reeled off an average of 10 yards on each line play. Steve Sabol, a sure pick for All-Southern Conference team, was the bulwark of defense in the \Volf packs line. - State averaged 45 yards on punts while Carolina made 38 yards on each kick. Out of five passes by the Birds, only one was completed for six yards. State completed 5 out of eight tosses and had one intercepted. State gained 217 yards from the rush ing attack while Carolina was losing as yards. The Birds-gained 375 yards on punts compared to 316 yards gai ed by the Wolfpack. The Tarheels fumbled 6 times to 3 for Carolina, and were penalized 81 yards to only 12 yards for the Game cocks. -One of the bright lights of the game was the stubborn stand of the Carolina team when State made a first and ten on the Birds one foot line. In thre plays the Wolfpack lost 12 yards as well as the ball. The other high light was the appear ance of the Columbia College girls who marched onto the field behind the Columbia Hi band and sat on the op posite side from the Carolina rooters. North Carolina very rudely upset the dope bucket by defeating the Vols of Tennessee, 38 to 13. Tulane also went hay wire in losing to Auburn, 10 to 0. The tie was a hard fought contest between Virginia and David- t< son, 0 to 0. With this game of pre- t dicting becoming harder each week, we tremble for fear our list of "those b missed" will become longer each suc- w ceeding week. But with a faltering C heart yet steady pen, we hasten on to our approaching doom. Here they & are. If they are right, all is fine, but if P they. are wrong, please remember that . even great men like George Washing ton make mistakes. The game this year promises to be bet ter than any Citadel contest in years, but Carolina is confident that her team wil withstand any onslaught the Charlestor team can muster. Finding Citadel money rather easy to get, many a student has staked a month's allowance on the out come of the battle. The highway to Orangeburg will be a picturesque sight on that day. Soft Baseball Being Planned Jack Crawford announced Wednesday morning that in addition to the intra mural sports already decided on, soft baseball will be included on this year's program. This game has recently be come very popular and he believes that i will add to the interest in intra-mural sports. No (late has been set for baseball, bul it will probably be in the early spring. Each tenement and each fraternity will be required to furnish balls and bats since it would be too expensive for the university to furnish them. The track has already been cindered and it is expected that there will be great deal of competition in this sport As announced last week there wvill bea medal given to the wvinner in each sporl and a loving ctup wvill be awarded eacl winning team. Carolina will enter the game as the underdog after their 14 to 0 loss to N. C. State the past Sat urday. Davidson held the State team to a one goal margin, 12 to 7. Carolina who has lost two consecu tive games in the past two weeks will journey to Davidson with the deter mination to end their losing streak. All of the injured players will be back in the line-up and for the first time since the opening game with Erskine, the birds will place their best team on the field at the starting whistle. Davidson did not look impressive in their scoreless tie game with the Uni versity of Virginia but are expected to be in top form for the game Satur day. The Wildcats looked good in their one touchdown loss to the strong N. C. State aggregation and will probably prove too strong for Carolina. Carolina has been practicing hard for the coming game and has held scrinm tmages with the frnch team that has brought a flicker of hope to the hearts of the bird supporters as the Game cocks charged fast, and played with determination. --. s. o.
