Geodetic Class Visits Johnson's Office A class in Geodetic and Topographic surveying at the University of South Carolina, in connection with ^ their study of stream gaging, recently visited the office of Albert E. John- j, son, district engineer of U. S. Geolog- j ical survey in Columbia, where they v saw how records of data on South S( Carolina streams arc compiled. 0 From there they proceeded to the t] Congarcc river where they observed e in operation the automatic gage, which records the rise and fall of the river tj at the Gervais street bridge. This c gaging station was recently com- 0 pleted by the U. S. Coast and Geo- t( logical Survey at a cost of several thousand dollars. . b *7. m. o. ^ Seven Hundred Winners . Free transportation within the city is being offered all contestants and reduced rates on meals may be secured at the Girls' Cafeteria in the Woman's ' Building and the Boys' Mess Hall on ^ the corner of Green and Sumter c streets. Best State Athletes Compete In Events Here Some 150 of the cream of South Carolina's high school athletic crop will compete in the track and field meets to be held on University Field Thursday and Friday of High School Week. Both Class C and B and Class A high schools of the State will hold their finals here under the direction of Carolina's A. \W. "Rock" Norman, track mentor. ?U. H. o.? Mayan Art Subject; Of Address To Students The students in the school of Fine Arts at the University of South Carolina were addressed on the subject of Mayan Art in Flinn llall at the University at 8 o'clock on April 10. The speaker was Robert Wauchope, son of a professor at the University, who has been on two archiological expeditions to the land of the Maya tribes. He illustrated his talk with many interesting specimens of Mayan Art which lie had brought back from his expeditions. Chemistry Award Offered Students Throughout State Membership to the American Chemical society for one year and free subscription to part of the chemical magazines is being offered as a prize to a student in chemistry in any of the colleges of the state. The person writing (he best essay and at the same time making the highest grade on an exam which will be given by the various colleges will be eligible for the award. These examinations will be given next fall, according to Prof. J. F. Copcnhaver, associate professor of Chemistry at the University. ?if. *. o.?
