Whristmas | Dane Dick Coy And His Orchestra Play; Decorations In Seasonal Taste 1 1 Of outstanding interest to the college set was the annual Christmas ball of the Damas Club, danced in the University gym tonight from 9:30 to i1:3?V Music for the Damas was furnished by Dick Coy and his Florida Coastal { Hotel Orchestra from the University of Chicago. This twelve piece orchestra lias played for several of the large dances given by Dartmouth, Yale and - other northern universities. It has also appeared on the Keith circuit in Atlantic City and Worcester, Massachusetts. n. Decorations for the dance were under the direction of Mrs. Susan Guignard Sparks, who ha? had charge of those for the last several dances. The Christmas theme was carried out in the decorations. In the center of the gym was an immense silver star suspended from the ceiling and hanging low over the heads of the dancers. Radiating from the star were long rays of yellow celophanc, sparkling in the glow cast by the lights. An interesting and novel feature of the scheme was the attractive arrangement at each of the windows. Small > houses of varying colors were built around each window. The windows of the gym served as windows in' the houses and in each window was placed a large holly wreath. This presented a holiday appearance outside as well as inside the gym. The orchestra was placed on a rostrum in the rear of the hall. The stand was attractively decorated in* Christmas colors. Alpha Omega celebrated their change of club rooms with a housewarming last Wednesday night. They moved from their old rooms over the College Shop to roofs at the residence of Mrs. W. W. Holland on Divine Street. Mrs. Ada Hess, Province president of Alpha Province of Zeta Tau Alpha will spend this week-end with the Beta Omricon chapter here. A luncheon will be given for her Saturday by Mrs. Charles Mercer. Saturday night the chapter will give a banquet in her honor at the Columbia Hotel. Agnes Sheley of Clinton visited the * Zeta Tau Alpha house last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Hoy Eargle, both former students here, visited the Zeta Tau Alphas Tuesday. They are now living in Barnwell. Mrs. Eargle will be remembered as Mayre Wall. Aleen Houghton spent last weekend in Union. Mrs. S. S. Brewer had two tables of bridge Friday night for some of the Z. T. A.'s and their friends. Alpha Delta Pi entertained five of the press association guests at their chapter house last week-end; Bobbie Burns, Frances Little, Sara Huggens,Louise Pearmon, and Louisa Martin. U. I. o. Sarah Davis To Entertain Club During the intermission of the Damas ball this evening Sarah Davis will entertain a number of her friends with a party at her home on the University campus. The guests will include sixteen couples, mostly members of Pi Beta Phi sorority and their dates. The Christmas color scheme of red and green will be effectively carried out in the living room and dining room where the guests will assemble. Coffee, sandwiches, and cakes will be served by the hostess, assisted by Helen Terry, Mary Lees Graham, Helen Cannon, Julia Park, and Sara Cassells. u. . o. The grand march, led by Miss Jessie Coleman and her date, Mr. James Brailsford took place promptly at eleven o'clock. Following the intermission at 11:30, was the junior figure led by Miss Rcbecca Taylor and her date, Mr. Alex Heise, Jr. The senior figure, led by Miss Claudia Knowlton and her date, Mr. Lewis Floyd, occurred at 12.30. Miss Alexander presented Gertrude Willis, junior hockey manager, with the cup for the victories of her team during the hockey tournament last week. 'I he junior team won games from the freshman, sophomores, and seniors. About thirty girls were present at the party. The occasion was strictly 1 informal and gym suits were the prescribed apparel. A hilarious game of ten-pin ball was played by the two groups into which the number was divided. T he co-eds, lead by the two gym instructresses, jumped rope, ran leapfrog and goal throwing relay races. Several proved their prowess in tumbling by headstands, front and back rolls. Miss Pope was very charming in her pale green rompers. Miss Alexander's ensemble was similar to that of Miss Pope but was blue in color. After the program a delightful salad and iced tea course was served to the guests seated on the floor. The president, Mary Ellen McCartha, was assisted by Millie Taylor and Mary Reese. Music Club Holds Meet Lucilla Mikell Hostess At Open Meeting- Of Junior Music Club Miss Lucilla Mikell wa^ hostess at the open meeting of the Junior Music Club, Tuesday evening at her home in Wales Garden. The assisting hostesses were Lois Fischer, Katherine Asbill, and Frances Cardwell. Ruth Hunt, the president, opened the meeting with an address of welcome to the guests, among whom was Mrs. Alexander S. Salley, the first director of the club. M. A. Shepherd was the program leader for the evening. Those taking part were: Beth Carson, Jane and Onnolee Ebaugh, William and Allen Taylor, Miss Rachel Little, Miss Myrtle Hendricks, Mrs. Maurice Matteson, Sarah White, Ruth Hunt and E. T. Gavin. The club members closed the program by singing Christmas carols. Refreshments were served in the dining room, where the table was decorated with a Christmas motif and 1 a color scheme of green and red was carried out. The centerpiece was a ' decorated miniature Christmas tree. This meeting was devoted entirely to' discussions, which were led by Mar- ? tjaret Estes. 1 A report was made on the conference c of the Southeastern regional conference which was held at Newberry ( College November 27-29. It was also ' announced by the president that Mar- 1 garet Estes, delegate from the Uni- 1 versify, was elected secretary of the s conference. ' layuviL Co-Ed Obtains Pilot's License Leah Zeigler Is Second Woman To Gain This Distinction At Local Airport It is a very co-edifying sight to see Carolina's own take to the air. And it's a girl! Leah Zeigler, second woman flier to qualify for a private license from the local airport, is a student at this institution. She is a sophomore and lives in Florence, where in September she started taking lessons. Last year she matriculated at N. C. Women's College but came to Carolina "because I couldn't stand being so far from an# airport any longer." However, she is planning to make her maiden flight to Greensboro some time this month. While at N. C. C. W. she majored in physical education, and was a four letter man. She is taking an A. B. at Carolina, including in her curriculum a course in mechanical drawing. She is the only girl in her class. She is planning to utilize her drawing knowledge in case she designs airplanes. She is a member of the Columbia Flying Club and Pi Beta Phi sorority. v. a. o. Delta Zeta Is Given Reception Delta Zeta sorority was received formally to hear the University Glee Club rehearse its program at the home of Mrs. Morris Lumpkin on Saluda Avenue last Sunday night from 9 to 11 o'clock, f The Glee Club under the direction of Maurice Matteson sang the pieces that they will use in their programs during the trip to New York. They include Christmas hymns, operatic numbers, and a manuscript group in which are several negro spirituals. Assisting Mrs. Lumpkin as hostess was Mrs. Maurice Matteson, who is also a patroness of the sorority. The guests besides the members of the Glee Club and Delta Zeta were the patrons of both the organizations. After the program a delightful buffet supper was served by the hostesses. U. H. O. Sorority Holds House- Warming Celebrating the moving of club rooms to new quarters at 1518 Divine Street, members and pledges enjoyed a House Warming last Friday afternoon. The affair was very informal while the refreshments consisted of home-made candy, marshmallows, chewing gum, and tangerines galore. Every girl contributed an article of canned goods for the Christmas Store and the society is planning a Christmas party, inviting a family of poor children, for the tree and pressnts. A's gave i reception last Saturday night in the obby of the Woman's Building, honring the visiting delegates here for the if. M. C. A. Conference from other :olleges. Along with the delegates a lumber of Centre boys enjoyed the iffair. Several of the girls played the >iano and Romaine Smith crooned .everal catchy solos.
