Birds ilv. $[; 1 Auburn Wins I Last Game Beats Carolina In Montgomery 13 to 6; Wolfe Makes Birds' ' Lone Score Carolina Lacks Punch i Twice Advances Ball Within OneYard Line Only to Fail Fourth Down After outgaining and outplaying the Auburn Tigers almost the entire game and getting the ball twice within the one-yard line only to lack the punch to put it over, the South Carolina Gamecocks dropped a heart-breaking season finale to the Plainsmen of Auburn at Montgomery, Ala., on Thanksgiving day, 13 to 6. Grayson Wolfe, who played pracItically the entire game at quarterback, crossed the goal line for Carolina's lone score while Auburn's counters came as a result of an intercepted pass and an 80-yard run. The Gamecocks, with Earl Clary, who played in spite of a bad knee injury that had kept him out of the N. C. State game the previous week, leading the attack, twice penetrated to within the one-yard line of the Tigers. The ball was lost once on the one-inch line. Auburn tallied once in the first quarter and again in the second, while the Birds also scored in the first quarter. Neither team was able to count in the second half. The Gamecocks received a bad break in the early moments of the game when Dave Meers was banished from the game for slugging and Carolina penalized half the distance of the goal, the penalty in this instance amounting to forty yards. u. 8. o. Georgia, I ulauc, Tennessee, Mabaina, and 1'enti. State have been uniored as possible foes of the Birds icxt season. ALABAMA? Hot Stove League talk may not be all washed up as far as a possible Alabama game is concerned. An Alabama city sports columnist says: "Billy Laval requested us not to mention the fact, but since it has been published, it may be pointed out that Alabama is trying to get a game next season with the Gamecocks. And, if this one is carded, you can look for a battle of the extraordinary variety." AUBURN COMING "More than 20,000 people," he says, 'paid to see Auburn's games in Montgomery against Southern, Tulane, and South Carolina. It was a year of depression. Pans had faith in the work Wynne and his aides were doing and bey came out to see the Tigers trot. 3etter business conditions next year md a similar Auburn schedule will >oost the 1931 figure considerably." The Gamecocks seemed to be schooled in the intricacies of performance and utilized the advantages of co-ordination between backfield and linesmen in a smooth running attack. They also excelled in forward passing and kicking, especially kicking due to the educated toe of one Mr. Hambright who averaged better than 40 yards throughout the game. A better punter was not to be found in the whole country. "Dick Shinn was a fast, powerful, hard-running back and most effective in co-operating with Earl Clary, the best offensive and defensive halfback South Carolina has produced in a decade." TO ANNAPOLIS Wilburn Clary, of the famous Gaffney Clarys, will probably be a candidate for the plebe eleven at Annapolis next year, having recently received an appointment there. Wilburn, it will be remembered, was the center unit in a triple pass that scored the touchdown that defeated Spartanburg high, 7 to 0, bringing about a victory that Gaffney later pointed to in its claim for the state championship. He can pass, punt, run, and kick placements and should make good at, the naval academy. / ^aBj . liarity ?< Chicks Defeat Florida Frosh Carolina's 1931 freshmen football team closed its season here Thanksgiving with a 20-0 victory over the hitherto undefeated Florida freshmen, who had previously defeated Alabama, Georgia Tech, and Auburn. Allie McDougall, on a line plunge, and James Riley and John Brown on intercepted passes, scored touchdowns for the Biddies. Mauncy place-kicked two of the extra points. Ray, Sullivan, Munn, and Rowland played best in the line and Mauncy starred in the backfield. CLARY Good Battles Still On Menu Although the football season is practically over, many interesting struggles remain on tap for this week. Outstanding among them are South Carolina vs. Centre; Southern California vs. Washington; Kentucky vs. Florida; Navy vs. Pennsylvania; Washington State vs. Tulane; Western Maryland vs. Maryland; Tennessee vs. N. Y. U.; Alabama vs. Chattanooga; Yale, Holy Cross, Dartmouth and Brown (Round Robin). ?- "EXCLUI i. _ -?? Welcome S CAROLINA Breakfast 20c "Where Ever; 1204 Main St. "The House THE R. L.
