Claryless and almost Shinnless, the Gamecocks treated the invading Wolves as they did Clemson, Furinan, and the Citadel with these two sterling ball carriers in the lineup practically the entire games. RESERVES GOOD A team is never any 'better than its reserves and the way the Carolina second stringers have been acting when given the chance this year is another source of keen delight for the Carolina fan over the football outlook. Buddy Morehead and Nelson Fortson have done an admirable job of pinch-hitting for Curran Hughey and "Fuzz" Freeman at the guard posts and these two reserves would first have to be considered in selecting an all-state team before exploiting to a great extent the varsities of other teams of the state for material. BACKS TWINKLE Grayson Wolfe, Astor Fleming, Bill Barrentine, and Bob Robbins, all sophomores except Fleming, who is a junior, saw service in the Carolina backfield against N. C. State and there wasn't one decigramme less efficiency noticeable in the execution of plays. Wolfe was the outstanding ball carrier while Fleming, Barrentine and Robbins shone on the defense. MEERS SMEARS 'EM If one Carolina man were to be decorated for his work against State, Dave Meers would probably get the nod. Dave would be singled out for conspicuous efficiency and consistency in playing in the State backfield?but as a State backfield man he was a good Carolina lineman and directed his actions accordingly. Dave played his best game of the year and was far and away the best lineman on the field. SOME RUBBISH Somebody figured out that Southern California is seven touchdowns better than Tulane, the two being almost certain contestants in the Rose Bowl game New Year's Day. It came about this way: Tulane defeated Georgia, 20 to 7, who downed N. Y. U., 7 to 6, who lost to Oregon, 14 to 6, who lost to Southern California, 53 to 0. ADD RUBBISH Comparative?scoringly speaking, Carolina is a touchdown, an extra point, a field goal, and a safety better than Tennessee, which you will recall is 25 points better than Alabama, which, incidentally, is a 74-7 better team than Clemson: Carolina beat N. C. State, 21 to 0; State lost to North Carolina, 18 to 15; and North Carolina lost to Tennessee by only 7 to 0. Count 'em up. U. ft. O. skin over for the second Gamecock touchdown on the first play in the fourth quarter. Hajck again made good the extra ^oint. Hambright's spectacular 43 yard run in the last period paved the way for Carolina's last score. This run put the ball on State's 6-yard line. Carolina waa then penalized five yards for too much time out. Wolfe dashed through center on the next play for the touchdown. Hajek's trusty toe once more did the trick. S , a Aga Carotin Centre ity Game I Post-Season Contest to Be Played On Melton Field Week From Saturday The University of South Carolina and Centre College, of Danville, Ky., will meet in a post-season game for the benefit of the Carlile Courtenay home school fund on Melton Field, December 5, one week from Saturday. Centre is undefeated in the S. I. A. A. race and has been beaten only once this season, by Boston College. Both Centre and Carolina close their regular playing season Thanksgiving Day, the former in a game with Chattanooga at Chattanooga for the championship of the S. I. A. A. and the latter with Auburn's Plainsmen, who last week held Georgia to a 12-G score. All proceeds of the game will go directly to the school house" fund and expenses of the game will be held at a minimum, no free passes being issued according to present plans. Florida And Carolina Tie Birds Rally In 4th Period To Tie Score After Gators Score In Second In a rcplica of a 7-7 tic played between South Carolina and Florida nearly a decade ago, the Gamecocks battled the Florida Gators to a G-G draw before a capacity crowd in Tampa, Fla., November 14. Florida menaced the Carolina goal during the first two periods of the game, capitalizing on a break of the game to score their lone touchdown. Carolina came back in the second half to keep the Gators worried and to tie the count with a 40-yard pass which resulted in a touchdown. The game seemed listless during the first half with Florida constantly menacing the Carolina goal. Then in the second period a Florida back snagged a Carolina pass and raced 65 yards for a touchdown. The try for point was blocked by Gil more. Late in the last period when it seemed that Carolina was to lose, Grayson Wolfe took the ball from center, faded behind his line, and heaved a 40-yard aerial to Fleming who raced the remaining 15 yards to cross the Florida goal. The try for point was spoiled due to a bad pass from center. Hajek attempted to run with the ball, but was smothered. A minute later the game was over. Although the score disclosed a tie, Carolina outgained Florida, 259 yards to 139, and it was in forward passing, in which Florida was supposed to exccl, that Carolina outplayed the Gators. The Gamecocks made 125 yards on passes while Florida made only 10. v. 8. o. Biddies Meet Florida Rats The University of South Carolina Biddies will close their season when they tangle with the University of Florida freshmen on Melton Field at 3 o'clock as a "Turkey Day" special Thursday. j The Biddies have a splendid recor.d, having defeated the Presbyterian Rats 7-6 in the season opener, drubbed the Clemson Cubs 17-0, and then taken the Citadel Bullpups into camp by the margin of a field goal. Furman sent down a powerful rat team and gave the Biddies their only defeat by a score of 14-6. Florida is sending up a great team of freshmen, so the fans who are not fortunate enough to see the Gamecocks tackle the Auburn Tigers will be treated to a scrappy game in their own back yard. it. m. a. Football is a great game?when you're up you're up and when you're down you're stomped. inst A ia9 21-0 Chuck Hajek Called in from his regular end position because of an injury to Joe Shinn, regular Carolina center, Hajek has done an admirable job of holding down the pivot position. Hajek is also of great value to the team because of his ability to placekick extra points.. He is a sophomore. Pugs, Cagers Working Out While football season is fast approaching a closc, candidates in two other sports?boxing and basketball? are working out regularly in anticipation of their opening season contests which will take place after the Christmas holidays. Coach Chct Wynne of Auburn has some cause for merriment in his charges, exhibition in holding the powerful Georgia Bulldogs to a 12-6 score and the game should be one of the hardest of the season for tjie Gamecocks. Carolina will be seeking to close their season with a victory and -J to avenge the defeat given them last year by these same felines. There is still some speculation as to whether Earl Clary, scintillating Carolina back, will see service in the Auburn fray, but about an even chance exists that the GafTney Ghost will get into the game even though he docs not start. However, the Carolina line that tore State's line to shreds will be intact from end to end. Captain Blount, Dick Shinn, Wolfe, Hambright, and their understudies will all be in good shape to face Auburn in the Thanksgiving classics which brings to a close the Gamecocks' season schedule. In case Clary is unable to start, Astor Fleming will probably take his place at halfback. Grayson Wolfe or Dick Shinn will start at quarterback, Fred Hambright at the other half- , back post, and Captain Miles Blount at fullback. * If You Want Service Call DENT'S CANDIES?CIGARS?SODA 1329 Main St. Phone 9334 OLET!!
