I SPO CAROLINA LOSES GAME TO CITADEL 5?. A remarkable catch by Whittington, Citadel backstop, of a high pop foul with two out and the bases loaded cut ' short a would-be game-winning rally and Citadel broke the Birds long winning streak of 25 games after the Lavalmen had beaten them the day before, 11-1. Bill Brigham pulled an iron-man stunt in chcckmg the Cadets after twirling nine innings Friday and added to his feat by smashing a triple and a homer, driving in four runs. It was he who popped out in the last play. In the Friday game, the Birds smached three Citadel pitchers off the mound and collected eleven runs. Laval starred at the bat with a triple, a homer and two doubles in five time$ up. He smashed the homer in the first with "Boineau on. Sikes, first baseman, let in the only Bulldog run in the ninth when he forgot to chase a ball thrown over his head and the runncd made the trip around nonchalantly. Roddey Speaks to Frosh on Banking President of Central Union Bank Talks in Chapel Wednesday Morning The freshmen who attended chapel Wednesday heard an entertaining and instructive lecture delivered by W. J. Roddey, Jr., on the subject, "Banking as a 1 rofession." Air. Roddey is president of the Central Union Bank of Columbia and is one of the state's most prominent bankers. "The bank, however," said Mr. Roddey, "is no place for the man desiring to get rich quick. Banking business has a low yield and return, and money is made gradually, not over night." "The most important requisite of a banker is character. Without character he cannot hope to attain success. Other people's money is entrusted to him and he must prove worthy of their trust. More now than ever before character is required of the customer of the bank. J. P. Morgan declares that credit is not based upon money but upon character." Mr. Roddey explained the steps in the banker's rise from bookkeeper to administrator and explained the duties of each position. The beginner's salary is from $60 to $75 a month and the successful executive's is near $10,000 a year. The banker in large cities may receive as much as $250,000. These salaries are not easily gained. The banker must make an extra effort and do more than is required by his job. He must work overtime when necessary and make an extra effort to attain success. ?-u. s. c.
