IJJ ' " : ~ Carolina NETMEN CRUSH CITADEL TEAM Racqueteers Wind Up Inter-Collegiate Season Undefeated? State Meet Here May 14, 15, 16 The state championship Carolina net team ran its string of consecutive 1 victories to seventeen Monday as it whipped the Citadel Bulldogs 6-1, to clinch their second strarcrht championship. ^ Taking the championship Monday the racqueteers gave Carolina two state championship in one afternoon, the Bird nine polishing its list of victories off with a 9-2 win over Newt)erry to take the baseball title. Getting off to a poor start, Holman lost the first match of the day to Farr of the visitors, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. The accurate service and placements of the cadct were too much for Carolina's number one man. From then on the day was allCarolina. Foster evened the meet up with a victory over Dial, of Columbia Hi two years ago, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Eliot Crum, number three, whipped Spann easily, 6-1, 6-1. Killingsworth took Holliday into camp, 6-4, 6-0, winning the only love set of the match. Collins, playing a consistent game, clinched the meet and the state title with a smashing win over Duckett, Citadel, 6-2, 6-2. In the Doubles Holman and Foster defeated Farr and Duckett, 6-2, 6-2, / and Collins and Crum ended the match with a 6-0, 6-8, 6-3 win over Dick and Spann, both of whom are former Columbia boys. This was probably Carolina's last \ inter-collegiate meet of tlu.* season, although a game with P. C. scheduled two weeks ago may be played before t the state meet, to be held here May 14, 15, 16. Coach Jack Oulla is well pleased with his cohorts and expects another successful year in 1932, as Chick Foster is the only man graduating. It is noteworthy that the team is well balanced. Killingsworth and Collins, Nos. 4 and 5, having won every match this year. HIKE BROWNHEADS 1932 TRACK TEAM Mike B frown was elected captain of the 1932 track team at a meeting of the lettermen Tuesday. Bryant Adair was chosen alternate captain. Brown wdn the state pole vault event last week in Clinton, at twelce feet, ile failed on the twelve-foot, three-inch mark. He is expected to rival or even break the record of Ross O'Dcll of twelve feet, four inches, which is the present state record. The track manager has not yet been chosen. Tripping Citadel in tennis and Newberry on the diamond, the Birds copped these two championships. Both teams have unmarred slates for the season. The racqueteers have taken seventeen consecutive matches and the Lavaliers twenty-four. Plans for a swimming team have fallen through because of inability to secure a suitable pool. This is another great improvement that could be instituted by the building of a new stadium. An offer to play the Army gridmen next October has been refused by Dr. Ralph K. Foster because of the nearness of the Citadel game. Carolina could certainly put itself on the map with games against big schools like West Point. The Chicago game of 1928 has given the school greater advertising than practically any other contest of this scholastic generation. With girls breaking into baseball all over the country, we are expecting to see coeds holding down positions on the Bird nine in the near future. There arc several of the fair sex we know who could do this fairly well and they would probably be exceedingly fast on the bases. Of course, they would serve to detract opponents^attention at times, adding to their value to the team. According to Jack Crawford, intra-mural baseball is due to start immediately. It will not be open to the campus this year but is limited to approximately ten fraternities, if it proves successful, an expanded intra-mural league will be formed next year. Carolina kept two of its state laurels in track when Curran Hughey and Frank Bostick broke their own shot put and high jump records. A champion track team looms in the near future with this year's team as a nucleus and excel ler*. material coming up from the frosh squad. Jack Crawford has introduced a new sport to the campus in indoor baseball. Similiar to baseball, it has caught on rapidly and keen competition is shown in the gym classes. Possibly Mr. Crawford is seeking new varsity baseball material. Or is another intra-mural sport in the offing? - ,V v'.k,: vewke-va!,:.,,, 5a, By RAY State Be LAVAUERS CRUSH CLEMSON BATSMEh JLARGE CROWD WITNESSES Edens Smashes Homer with Twc on in Second?Score 10-1 Heavy hitting combined with fiv< Clemson errors gave the Lavalier: their eleventh consecutive inter-collegi ate victory of the year with a ten-on< win over the Tigers.
