| FRATERNITY NEWS The Pi Kappa Alpha's have move from Saluda Avenue to 615 Plcken Street in the house which previousl; the Tri-Delta club rooms. The Sigma Nu's have bought % home in Maxy Gregg Park. The Pi Kappa Phi's held a rusl f; dance at Lakeview Tuesday night Sept. 23. The cliaperones were Mr. ant Mrs. F. H. Houser of St. Matthews, ant Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Fowles of Co lumbia. The Phi Sigma Kappa's have movec from Green Street to 1608 College Street. Carol Abrams, of Georgetown honor graduate of the Commerce class of 1929, and Marion Poliakoff of Abbeville, former superior of the chapter, were vistors to Phi Epsilon Pi during the past week. The Kappa Alpha's are now living at 811 Henderson Street. The Phi Kappa Sigmas arc now established in their new home at 1002 Bull Street. The Sigma Phi Epsilon's have moved in next to the town theater on Sumter Street. The Phi Sigma Kappas gave a rush dance Friday night, September 19, l and a Smoker on Wednesday night, September 24. Another dance is planned for Friday night. The Sigma Nu's ranks have been boosted by the addition of two transfers from the chapter at Sewance. The two men are Duncan Lang, of Camden, and Dick Sturgis, of Rock Hill.LOST: Two Phi Sigma Kappa pins have been lost somewhere on the campus. KISMET DISBANDS; FORMED IN 1920 j PROMINENT ON CAMPUS Members Held Student Body Positions and Were Leaders of Athletic Teams The Kismet Club, after petitioning Phi Delta Theta for three years, has disbanded, due to its failure to receive recognition at the national fraternity convention. The club was organized during the session of 1920-'21 and has produced some of the leading men of the campus. Its men have taken part in every phase of college life and the club deserves credit for the game uphill fight it made. The honors it attained through its membership include three student body presidents, three football captains, two baseball captains, the boxing champion of the Southern Conference and other achievements too numerous to mention. Its members included E. F. Farr, president ; L. Beachman, Buford Worthy, H. R. Swink, Gordon Quattlebaum, M. H. Shepherd, and Freddie Knoblock. A seismograph, an instrument used foi r detecting earthquakes anywhere in th r world, will soon be insialled in the Uni' versity of South Carolina by the Unitet e States Coast and Geodetic. Survey. Dr Stephen Taber, head of the Department of Geology, will have complete charge oi this new instrument. The seismograph records a tremor in ' the' earth by a light ray, reflected from a mirror, and thrown upon a photographic plate. The distance of the earthquake can be found by the time intervals between eath wave that is recorded. How' ever, to find the exact position of the : 'quake it is necessary for three different instruments at different places to com. pare their recording and ascertain in i what portion of the earth the movement took place. , It is singular that the University of ; South Carolina is the only college or university in the South to be equipped #by the government with one of these instruments. There are several in the North, but most in this country are situated on the Pacific coast, according to Dr. Taber, who is one ^of this country's most famous men in his line. NEGROljUARTET APPEARS FOR "Y" R. G. BELL LEADS SERVICE Tribute Paid to Old Freshman Council; Appeal Made for Larger Attendance The Y. M. C. A. opened its series of weekly Sunday night meetings with services given in Chapel last Sunday night. The program was featured by spirituals of the negro quartet from the Zion Baptist Church. The quartet was much enjoyed by the audience, a fairly large one for the opening meeting. The services were conducted by R. G. Bell, who called attention to the fact that the responsive readings and psalms were printed on the programs, I a practice that will be carried out in future. Mr. Bell made an appeal to the freshmen to attend in larger numbers and for the upperclassmen to regain their "Y"-going habits. He also paid tribute to the frosh council of last year, and invited all new men to join the council to be formed during the week. MRS. DEAN TO TEACH DANCING Columbia and the University will have an added feature to their growing lists of players and dancers. Mrs. William Dean has organized the Dean Dancers of the University of Sout'.i Carolina, a school to be devoted to the teaching of simple and also the more difficult dances necessary to the performer. The dancers to be used in the performances will be selected after competitive trials and tests. The Dean Dancers will perform with the Palmetto Players, and will work partly in co-operation with this organization. Mrs. Dean has been associated with Professor Dean in the training of the Palmetto Players' dancers.
