SOCIETIES MEET There will be a meeting of the Student Board of Publications Wednesday night, March 12, at 7:30, to make elections for The Carolinian staff. Aspirants are advised that they must be a njember in good standing, of a literary society in order to qualify for any position on the new staff. All nominations must be submitted at this meeting. Article four, on the qualifications and election of the editor-in-chief, was changed upon motion of %Miss Ruth Ellsworth to read "man" and "woman" instead of "male" and "female." W. W. Jones, rising with a grin, then moved as a jest that the wording be change to "boy" and "girl," which was done seriously. After long argument and discussion led by Miss New, Atkinson and DePass, Article four passed. An amendment of Atkinson's changing the number of nominees for an editorial candidate at large from ten of each society to five of each society passed with the article. Articles five and six passed with only a slight change in the former. An associate editor from each of the girls societies, and two from each of the boys was provided by Article seven as revised from "four associate editors" in the original. Miss New suggested that one associate editor be a girl when DePass pointed out the article's weakness. At least one girl and one boy shall be of the junior class, according to a second provision added. To facilitate matters, Joe Hiott then moved that the next four articles be passed upon as a unit. Articles eight, nine, ten, and eleven were therefore read by DePass. DePass ^ disagreed with this plan, and Miss J New suggested that the societies meet only to discuss the proposed amend. ments. W. W. Jones spoke against ^ any change in the wording proposed. ? Case called attention to the difference ?j in ownership shares of the magazine, each girls' society having one-sixth, and each boys' one-third. In clause one, the words "meeting separately" remained, but these "and voted upon by the societies" were struck out and amended to read "each voting separately in a joint session." It was decided that a quorum of each would be sufficient, instead of a majority vote. On passage of the thirteenth and last article, Nigel League asked that each person present shake hands with Mr. DePass and thank him for drawing up the constitution. One ardent member of the Hypatian society expressed her approval with a kiss, however. The constitution as revised and approved by the four societies will be published in a future issue of The Gamecock and placed in the record books of each society, it was decided. u.s.o.
