CHRISTMAS TREE
WILL BE GIVEN
Presents Will Be Distributed To
Fifty Needy Children From
Columbia
Wednesday afternoon presents from
a Christmas tree will be distributed
in Flinn Hall for fifty needy children
from town. The Y. W. C. A. has secured
the names of the children from
the Associated Charities and gifts will
be given each child. There will be
about twenty-five girls and twenty-five
boys.
A Y. W. C. A. committee, headed by
Miss Beth Carson, has prepared gifts
for each girl. Monday afternoon presents
were purchased for the boys by a
committee of the Y. M. C. A. men
under Bill Latham. Jack Douglas had
the tree arranged and decorated this
afternoon.
Santa Clans (a la Punk Atkinson)
will be there to help in the distribution
of gifts. Nuts, candy and fruit
will also be given to the children. The
"Y" expects the Christmas tree this
year to be a big success.

MANY GIFTS ARE
GIVEN LIBRARY |L
MANY FRIENDS CONTRIBUTE F
The library of the University of
South Carolina is a treasure storehouse
of rare and beautiful objects.
Friends of the University are constantly
adding to its store, and recently
several valuable gifts have been made,
according to R. M. Kennedy, librarian.
A complete file from 1875 to 1897 of
the Columbia Daily Register was presented
by W. E. Gonzales, editor of
The State. Mr. Gonzales had previously
given the University a complete
file of the Columbia Daily
Phoenix.
O. D. K., honorary fraternity, gave
the library a handsomely framed copy
of the seal of South Carolina, which
matches the other gift of the fraternity
to the library, a replica in wax
of the seal of the Southern Confederacy.
Mrs. Mary S. Cowans of Columbia
gave a collection of authorized Christian
Science publications.
New books have been added to the
equipment of the library, states Mr.
Kennedy, and students spend much of
their time in the reading room. Two
dozen additional chairs have been ordered
for the reading rooms and they
will be delivered before Christmas.
