LOCAL PLAYERS GO TO NEW YORK WILL LEAVE ON JUNE 10th Misses Freeman and Hall Will Study Music in Metro politan City Misses Julia Hall, pianist and Eliza beth Freeman, violinist, both con nected with the Maurice Matteson Studios of Music at the University, and outstanding musicians of the city, are planning to leave on June the 10 for New York for further study along their chosen lines. Miss Hall intends to work with Ernest Hutcheson on the graduate faculty of the Julliard Institute of Music, one of the greatest living ex ponents of the piano, and a pianist and teacher of world recognition. Miss Freeman expects to pursue her art under the skillful guidance of Max Rosen, a violinist whose brilliance is unsurpassed. Columbia music lovers were fortunate in having the oppor tunity of hearing him several years ago, as a part of the annual Artist Course. Miss Freeman is a graduate of this institution having received her A. B. degree here last June. She is at present taking work leading to her master's degree in addition to teach ing music. Miss Freeman is popular among her fellow students and has always been interested in student af fairs. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Gamma, leadership sorority. Y. W. C. A. CABINET AT LAF-A-LOT Girls Retreat to Camp for Week end of Planning The new cabinet of the Y. W. C. A. went on a retreat to Camp Laf-a-lot this week-end in order to make plans for next year and to discuss an orentation camp for the freshmen. Leader of the retreat were: Miss Lelia Johnson, of the Sociology department and Miss Eleoise Shepherd, the former president. It is the policy of the Y. W. C. A. to retreat each year with the new cabinet in order to make plans for the coming year. MISS WALL HEADS A. K. G. SORORITY Honored by Presidency of Flor ence Nightingale Circle At the last meeting of the Florence Nightingal Circle of Alpha Kappa Gamma, Miss Mary Wall of Lancaster was elected president. Miss Wall at tended the National Convention of the Sorority held at Farmville, Vir ginia last week. Other officers elected were: vice-president, Foy Stevenson; secretary, Virginia Muller; and treas urer, Anne New. ---U.s.C. K. S. K. ELECTS NEW OFFICERS At a recent meeting of the girls K. S. K. the following officers were elected: president, Mildred Hartness; vice-president, Darice Jackson; secre tary, Louisa Taber; treasurer, Kitty Griffin; ushers, Lucy Coleman, Ruth D)uRant, Georgia Fishburn and Rosa lyn Quattlebaum. The new officers will be installed in the near future. PHI CHI CLUB GIVES BANQUET AT ROSE MARY TEA ROOM Monday evening, May 6 the Phi Chi Club members and invited guests en joyed a formal banquet at the Rose Mary Tea Room. Toasts wtre given by "Stumpy" McLeod, Eddie Pritch ard, Antionette Moore and Ruth Du: Rant. There was dancing and music by the Collegians. Out of town guests at the banquet were: Misses Hazel Baucum and Frances Remick, from the University of Alabama. Misses Baucum and emick mw..e ED NE3 GUSTAF SYLVAN - PRESENTS GIFT Art Department Recipient of Seth Thomas Wall Clock The University Art department is the recipient of a beautiful wall clock given to this department by Mr. Gustaf Sylvan, popular Columbia jeweler. The clock is a Seth Thomas wall clock and is a handsome niece of furniture. This is the second clock that Mr. Sylvan has given to the University recently. When the new Information Bureau was established Mr. Sylvan saw the need for a clock in the office of the Bureau so he at once pioceeded to donate one to this cause. This friend of the University has also contributed other gifts to the University. He gives a medal each year to the School of Commerce, one to the best debater at the University, and is always ready to do anything for this institution in his power. The Art department wishes to use this method of thanking Mr. Sylvan for his beautiful and useful gift which this department has long needed. GIRLS ORGANIZE SERVICE CLUB Outstanding Educational Students Chosen for Membership in Organization A meeting was held Friday evening, May 17 in DeSaussure College for the purpose of organizing a group of women interested in Education, to pe tition Pi Lambda Theta, one of the national women's sororities in educa tion. The members of this club were chosen on a purely scholastic basis, according to records that they have made, not only in Education but in all subjects. Very few seniors were invited to become members because they will not be available for coopera tive work for next year. Officers elected at the meeting were: president, Mrs. Lyons; vice-president, Ruth Brown; recording secretary, Virginia Muller; corresponding secretary, Mat tie Thomas. Other members are: Wil Lou Gray, Mrs. Childs, Emily Gates Geiger, Miss Team, Virginia DuRant, Annie Kaminer, Marie Edwards, Mary Emerson, Lucy Cole, Mary Hutchison, Mildred Routh, Olive Battle, Malinda Barnwell, Florence Earle Roach, Vylette Culbreath, Kate Sherer, Janie Brant and Rachel Muller. MAYRE WALL TO HEAD SOCIETY Euphrosyneans Elect Prominent Co-Ed President for Fall Term Th le Euphrosynean Literary Society, at its regular meeting Wednesday afternoon, May 8, in the Euphradian hall, held the election of officers for the term consisting of the remainder of this scholastic year and the be ginning of next. The following were elected: president, Mary Wall; vice president, Harriet Whitaker; secretary, Florence Stone; treasurer, D)arice Jackson; critic, Virginia Muller; and censor, Jewvell Parrott. Miss Olive Battle was elected as the society representative on the deb)ating council. Miss Wall, the newly elected presi dent, has been in the society since the first semester of her Freshman year and has always taken an active part in all the actiVities of the organization. Miss WVall is known to the majority of the students as being the best co ed debater of the University. She has debated both \Vinthrop and William and Mary. honor guests at a garden party on Monday afternoon given by Mrs. T. I. Weston. On Tuesday, May 7, Mrs. W. E., Rowe entertained the club with a bridge dinner at her home on the campus. High score prize wvas won by Mildred Hins VS RUTH BROWN NAT'L OFFICER IN FRAT Local President Grand Secretary and Editor of National Publication At the National Convention of Eta Sigma Phi Latin and Greek Frater nity, held May 1, 2 and 3, at Missis sippi State College, located at Colum bus, Miss. Ruth Brown was elected Grand Secretary of the Fraternity. Miss Brown will also be editor of the official publication of the fraternity, and will edit the NUNTIUS in Colum bia for the coming year. This is prob ably the best responsible position on the National Council. DELTA SIGMA PI TO PRESENT KEY FIRST TIME AT CAROLINA Will Present Award to Graduate of School of Commerce The Beta Gamma Chapter of the International Fraternity of Delta Sig ma Pi will present a beautiful scholar ship key to the faculty of the School of Commerce, who shall award the same to the senior who upon. gradua tion this June ranks highest in schol arship for the entire course in com merce. Delta Sigma Pi gives - this key to each of its forty-eight chapters every year, to be awarded in any way the chapter sees fit. The key this year will be first of its kind to be awarded at the University and will be presented by . Dean Olson of the School of Commerce at the Com mencement exercises. This key will be awarded each year in the future, and is just one of the many ways that Delta Sigma Pi strives to raise the scholarship rating in the various schools of commerce over the entire country. J. WV. Pitts, assistant editor of The Carolinian, was chosen by acclaima tion to be president of the fraternity. Ashley Halsey, Jr., associate edlitor of The Gamecock and The Carolinian, takes office next term as vice-presi (lent, and Arthur Crane, Chanticleer club member, will serve as secretary and treasurer of the organization. Trhe two officials last niamed were also elected by the approval of all those present. In the selection of members to be initiated into the fraternity, a rep resentative group of literary men about the campus wvere passed by the club. Probable neophytes include A.
