Fowl Tips By Julian Krawchek RAY EDWARDS whiffed three Furman men in succession in the second inning of the game with the Capitals here last Monday. Not an impossible feat by any means, but just one of those lit tle things that isn't done with any degree of frequency. CAROLINA'S G A M E C O C K S flashed true championship calibre in both the Furman and Wofford games last week to retain their position on the top rung of the state collegiate baseball ladder. Those Roosters always have a habit of crowing loudest when they're on top. THREE SOUTH CAROLINA state high school records were shattered Friday afternoon at the state meet on Melton Field which Spartanburg High School's Scar let Tanagers copped. The high hurdles, shot put, and mile run, were the records that underwent a change. WHICH ALL GOES to show that some college team is going to have some great track material when these young record smash ers begin their quest for a college education. Don't be caught nap ping CAROLINA. CAROLINA MIGHT NOT be setting the world afire in tennis this year, but in Oulla, Ketchin, Black, Ramsden, and Foster, the University has five netmen, who, with a little more seasoning un der a regular coach, will be a good match for almost any col legiate team, the country over. BOSTICK, newly elected captain of the freshmen track team, is a man that will bear further watching in varsity circles next year. This trackster, besides being an excel lent broad jumper, is capable of clearing the bar as well. THE UNIVERSITY ATHLET ICS, broader in it scope than most of the other South Carolina col leges, should be enlarged still fur ther to include wrestling and golf. At present the eight sports that Carolina engages in, are football, baseball, basketball, track, box ing, tennis, swimming, and fenc ing. WRESTLING IS A SPORT that has established itself on a perma nent basis in other large colleges all over the country, and golf, is a newer form of collegiate compe tition that Carolina should adopt if she is to continue to keep in step with other progressive col leges and universities. BELIEVE IT OR TAKE MY WORD FOR IT. Bob Stoddard, who had been driven from, the mound by Wofford in the game last Saturday, came thru with a homer in the eighth frame to place Carolina in the lead and win the game for his brother Hugh, who pitched hitless ball for four innings as relief twirler. Page Mr. Ripley. KENNEDY, Carolina high jumper, leaped six feet, two inches, in the high jump during the track meet with Clemson Saturday. This is an unofficial state record, and ex ceeds by one inch the jump -made Saturday which won the event at the Penn. State t-elays. Take an extra puff on that; GAMECOCKS TRIM WOFFORD CLOSELY Carolina Batmen Wrest Appar ently Hopeless Game From Terriers PRETTY PITCHING DONE Stoddard Brothers Star On Mound And At Bat; Edens Also Good Hugh Stoddard, Carolina relief twirler, hurled hitless baseball for four innings against Wofford Satur day, while his team mates were ham mering the offerings of Rouse, Metho dist pitcher, all over the lot, and the Gamecocks rallied to a brilliant finish o overcome an apparently overwhelm ing Terrier lead, and take the long end of an 11 to 10 count on Melton Field. With two men out, and one man on base in the eighth frame, Bob Stod dard, who had previously been driven from the mound by the Woffordites, came through with a homer that put Carolina ahead and won the game for his hard working brother, Hugh. Wofford landed on Bob Stoddard in the second inning for two hits, and this combined with a couple of costly errors, gave Wofford four runs. Not satisfied with this, the Methodists an nexed three more in the fourth and fifth innings, meanwhile holding the Gamecocks to one lone run. With the score ten to one against them, Carolina started things hum ming their own way in their half of the fifth, tallying three times to cut down the Terrier lead. Wofford com pletely blew up in the sixth and Caro lina scored five times, to come within one run of the Methodist's lead. Bob Stoddard's homer in the eighth with one man on did the remainder of the damage to the Spartanburg Col legian's hopes, and enabled Carolina to maintain its lead in the state race. Edens with a triple and single, and H. Stoddard with a homer and single, led the batting attack for the Roosters while Fairy, Wofford short stop, led at the bat for the Methodists. Rouse, Wofford hurler, issued ten Annie Oakleys to Carolina, while Bob and Hugh Stoddard let out seven passes between them. WINDUS LEADS SLUGGERS LEAD STATE RACE Windus Has Highest Average Closely Followed By Chandler By N. W. BROOKER The Gamecock hats have been thun dering forth this season with such creditable force that, now, the haughty bird sits perched on the top rung of the state championship ladder. Al though it may seem that hits have not come as often as one would like, when they do come, they are so close together that many a game, seemingly lost, has been pulled out of the fire and chalked up as a Carolina victory. One of the outstanding games of the season, as far as hitting is concerned, was the game with Presbyterian Col lege. The Carolina "murderers row" garnered no less than four triples and three doubles in this one game. "Lou" White hammered out two triples, Win dus and Chandler pulled down a triple, and a double each, and Edens got a triple, not to speak of many sin gles, in which the entire team shared. Probably the highlight of the season, along this line so far was the home run that White obtained in the Fur man game. This is the first hit to clear the *fence this season. Chandler smashed out a home run in the Ers kine game but this hit did not go out 'fth -lot".- - By 0. D. BLACK GAMECOCKS LOSE IN TRACK MEET Tigers Show Superiority In Track Events; Kennedy High Man For S. 0. Clemson annexed 11 first places against Carolina's four and took a duel track meet from the Gamecocks, 81 to 50, at Clemson Saturday afternoon. The Tiger tracksters showed up especially well in the track events, taking first places in all except the low hurdles which was annexed by Boineau for Carolina. In the quarter mile and broad jump, the Bengals took all three places. Kennedy with 10 points was high man for Carolina, unofficially break ing the state record for the high jump with a leap of six feet, two inches, and also annexing the javelin throw with a toss of 172 feet, one inch. Power Rogers took the pole vault, clearing the bar at 11 feet, 2 inches, while Boi neau hopped the low hurdles in 26 2-5 seconds, to complete Carolina's list of firsts. The following is the batting aver ages of the team for the ten games played (correct through the Furman game). They were compiled from sta tistics obtained from the official score book. Player C.
