The varsity was forced to take a dim back seat while the freshmen bettered their time in two or three of the events with P. C. STODDARD BLANKS CLEMSON TIGERS In one of those seldom seen pitch ing duels of few hits and jam-up fielding, Stoddard bested Mahaffey of Clemson 2-0, Monday afternoon on the Tiger diamond. Air tight and sensational fielding helped Stoddard greatly in his shut out victory. Only two errors were chalked up against the Birds. When the first shadows of darkness settled over the field in the eleventh inning and the game seemed destined to result in a tie, Chandler led off with a single. Edens h)unted and was safe at first. Rhame flew out. Stod dard, rather weary from the seemingly endless struggle, caught one on the nose for a double,,to score Chandler and Edens. It was a case of which pitcher would crack first. Mahaffey blew up in the eleventh inning and the game was won. Stoddard caused nine Clemson bat ters to whiff the air, while Mahaffey struck out twelve Carolina hopfs. The only one who proved at all successful was Bob Stoddard who gave the professionals one hit in two innings. The Birds got beat, but two or three men showed that they could hit any man's pitching. Chandler, Edens and Rhame each garnered two hits out of four times at the bat. The work of all three has been exception ally good in all of the games played thus far. Sixteen men were used by the Birds in the contest while the professionals used fifteen. Every man on both teams was given a chance to show his potentialities for the season. The Comers appear to have a smooth working machine which im proves as each day goes by. Manager Joe Kelly, Packard, Andrews and Galloway showed the fans a nice brand of baseball.
