The purchase price was not dis closed but it is believed to have been thirty cents and a plug of chewing tobacco. Mercer came to the Gamecocks from the University of Missouri where he was a sensation in many sports being a star football gyarterback,. a wonder, ful forward on the basketball team and the best college pitcher ever developed in the State of Missouri. Charlie has been working out regu larly so far this season on Davis Field and should be in fine shape when he reaches New York. This year in practice Mercer struck out 27 men in one game with his fast ball. Manager Miller Huggins of the Yankees said that in Mercer he had the best pitcher that he had even seen excluding none. Manager Huggins expects to use Mercer in the opening game in New York against the Phila delphia Athletics.
