NORTH CAROLINA MAKES COMEBAC( WINNING 45-- 33 SCORE END OF HALF 20-18 Hackney Leads Scoring With Rembert and White Trailing Leading at the half with only a two point margin, North Carolina's Tar. heels came back, refreshed from a 15 minute rest period, in the second hall to outshoot the birds and win 45-33. For all of the first half it was nip and tuck with first one team leading and then the other. Unable to break the Bird's five man defence the Tar heels resorted to a five man running attack in the second half, getting better results. Both teams displayed some beauti ful work, but the Gamecocks had it all over the Tarheels in the finer points of the game. The score gives the results but it does not tell of the fighting de fense of the Birds. No one could have beaten North Carolina Saturday night They had on their shooting togs and could not be denied victory. Carolina got the jump in the early stages of the game, leading at one time 11 to 4, which looked like an easy victory. The Tarheels thought differ ently however and got to work, gath ering 10 points to the Gamecocks 2, to take the lead. Just before the whistle to end the half, Satterfield, baby of the Tarheel squad, shot a long one from the middle of the floor to put his team ahead 20-18. The second half was all the Tar heels. The ball began to swish through the basket time and again to weaken the strong hearts of Gamecock sup porters, as they saw victory fast float ing away. All of the Birds played a bang-up defensive game, bkut just a little off at shooting baskets. Dave Remberl played his prettiest game of the year when he rang the most intricate shots from all positions. White and Windus also performed in creditable style. All of the Tarheel squad rang bas kets with consistency. Hackney topped the scorers for the night with 16 points BIRDS AND DOGS TO SWAP SOCS IN RESIN RING BIG FIGHT EXPECTED Dope Says Knock Out For Harry Wolfe at Hands of "Polk" Skelton After two weeks of inactivity the Gamecock leather pushers get into ac tion Wednesday night pitted against the maulers of The Citadel. NORTH CAROLINA'S coach must have spoken an earful to his pro teges at the rest period, the way they camne back the last half to seW up the 'ole game. COACH NORMAN has produced the "Miracle team." With only two regulars from last year he has molded a team, which stays in there with the best of them. 'THAT FIVE MAN defense of the Gamecocks was working with machine-like precision for the first half, but the "lucky" Tarheels just couldn't keep the ball out of the basket in the second. TFI' FRESHMEN haven't lost a game this season. Prospects for the future are beginning to take on a rosy hue. ADVANCE DOPE for the Tarheel camp said that "Puny" Harper, their latest "find," would get 9 out of ten tip-offs. Sounded like a lot of hooey when it was received but now we know it. Lou White, on the way down from the tip-off met him going up. As a result Harper had a low "slamming" average of only one out of ten. WHAT SATTERFIELD lacked in height he made up in dynamic energy. He was here, there and everywhere at - the same time, shooting with deadly accuracy. CITADEL IS pretty cocky sitting on top if the state basketball heap but fhe Gamecocks, perched in second place, are giving 'em a little worry. Blue Mephistos and Praying Colonel GAMES PLAYED THIS WEEK HERE The Duke Blue Devils, fresh from a' hard fought victory over the Chapel H-ill Five, come to meet the Gamuecocks Wednesday night. After a poor start at the beginning of the season Duke has stepped out as one of the leading (lark horses of he conference. Their sensational cen ter, Joe Crowson has been the out - standing player of the nicotines and bids fair to be one of the ranking centers of the conference before the race is over. Concluding a week, crammed full of athletic events for the sport lovers, Carolina entertains Sewanee in the home court Saturday night. - This is the first. time that a Sewane team has ever played in the Field 'House, and the first time that any athletic relations have been entered into by tle two teams in quitea while. Triangles in a one-sided game, with the outcome never in doubt, the Biddies continued their winning streak of three straight games. From the first tip off the chicks jumped into the lead, never to be head ed. From then to the whistle fans saw a smooth working machine in ac tion. Metts was the high scorer of the game, slipping through the Biddies de fense time after time to ring up a total of twelve points or exactly three fourths of his team's score. The whole Chick team was there with the usual smooth working bas ketball offence and an airtight defense. Mauldin led the attack of the Young Gamecocks with 10 points. If credit is given for the victory the whole team would have to be mentioned for all came through in great style. This is the third straight win for the Yovng Roosters. Coach Norman has developed from a mediocre bunch of material, a Freshman team that looks like a sure winner for the State Cham pionship.
