Matteson Ensemble Presents Program Large Crowd Hears Member* of University Faculty in Chapel The Matteson Studio Ensemble gave a concert in the cniversity auditorium Friday night, those taking part being Misses Cleo Johnson, Elizabeth Freeman, Julia Hall, and Professor Kershaw Walsh. The ensemble featuring Belle Nuit from the Tales of Hoffman and Schu bert's Serenade marked the climax of the very excellent program. Miss Cleo Johnson, soprano, was in excellent voice and was generously ap plauded at the end of her two groups of songs. Miss Julia Hall, instructor in piano in the Matteson Studios evinced once more to an appreciative audience that she has one of the firmest and surest touches among the younger group of Columbia's pianists. Kershaw Walsh, instructor in Psy choyogy at Carolina in his duet with Miss Johnson and in his solo numbers proved himself a pleasant tenor which merits much praise. Probably surest of all in technique and general mastery of her art was Miss Elizabeth Freeman, instructor in violin for the Matteson Music Studios, whose exquisite interpretation of de Beriot's Concerto No. VII was one f the best numbers of the evening. One of the largest audiences ever as sembled for such a musical event at Car olina almost filled the chapel auditorium and greeted each selection with an en thusiasm indicative of a real, though newly aroused interest in this depart ment of the University. Nelle Nuit (Offenbach) and Serenade (Shubert) by the ensemble. Professor Kennedy Leaves for Biloxi To Represent University at Meeting of Southeastern Library Asan. R. M. Kennedy, University librarian will leave for Biloxi, Miss., on No vember 6, where he will represent the University of South Carolina at the meeting of the Southeastern Library Association. Pan Hellenic Plans Campus Activity Cup At the November meeting of Pan Hellenic it was decided to formulate plans for the securing of an activities cup to be presented to the fraternity or club havIng the highest average in participatIon In campus activities it was appointed by Dean Irene Dillard to work out a point system by which the cup will be awarded. Pan-Hellenic already offers a scholarship cup, which has been won for the last two se seaters by Chi Omega. - UTLDING AND Pt I. .Pipe--Valves-FPittintgs, I University Student Has Freak Hobby Doen't Ask For Pedigrees in Mules-Cares Only For Sociability Since college men are notoriously collectors of many miscellaneous ob jects, it is not strange that the Caro lina campus should have its share of curious hobbies. Probably unique, even among college collections, how ever, is that of a certain sophomore whose weakness is mules with romantic names. His first acquisition in this field was a singularly docile animal called Blanch. As a gift from sympathetic friends who knew his ruling passion, she arrived in a case which effectually ccrcealed her identity until the lid states that his joy at recognizing her was taken off. But her new owner more than compensated for his pre vious fear that the package contained high explosive or other evidences of his friends' playfulness. Thus far, Blanche has survived quite happily, except for little loneliness due to the strangeness of dormitory life. However, this was remedied by the advent of a companion-Jenny, a cream-colored lady whose amiability is second only to that of Blanche her self. Their owner avers that the quiet nature of the pair makes them ideal .nmpanions for any tired college man an1 strongly recommends their adop tion as a cheering influence in any home. "When I wake up in the morning," he states, "and seq Blanche and Jenny parked upon my table, it puts me in a "Por humor for the rest of the day. What if they did both come from Woolworth's? I don't ask for pedi rr's in mules-all I want is socia bility." ---u-USc La Tertulia Meets With Mrs. Rowe Large Number of Old Members And Many New Ones Attend La Tertulia Espanola met Monday night, Nov. 5, at the home of Mrs. W. E. Rowe on Pendleton Street .A goodly number of the old members were pre sent and several of the new. During the evening light refreshments were served. At a meeting held two weeks ago, in Melton Hall, Professor Keith conducted the program, which was divided into two parts. The first section consisted of a lecture on anatomy illustrated by a large doll. The terms were, of course, in Spanish. The second part of the program con sisted of readings from Spanish love poems and comment on the musical me tres employed. Professor Keith's rendition was high ly applauded, and the program was gen erally considered the best the club has given in some time. ---Usc-----e Practice Schedules All Begin This Week Hockey Schedule Announced For Freob, Sopias, Juniors Anki Seniors The Athletic Association has com pleted the schedule for hockey practices, and they will begin this week, juniors and sophomores practicing tomorrow and Friday, freshmen and seniors practicing Thursday. Next week practice days will be In reverse order, freshmen and seniors practicing on Monday, Wednes day and FrIday. Certain remarks have been passed anent the beauty, the circumspection, the intelligence and the raison d'etre of this particular class of college adolescent and the female of the species has girded up her, that is, has donned her fighting garments, much too intimate to men tion here, and has requested, nay, per emptorily demanded why such a state of affairs exists. It is really refresh ing to see the fair damsels up in arms and not merely in arms. It is no longer trite to say, in these present enlightened times, that the woman pays. It is a calm reality though studded here and there with frequent aberrations, it is true. Wo man, as a whole, has been the butt of man's jokes since Eve pulled that little fruit deal on Father Adam. No digest of the world's worst in humor would he complete without the mother-in law jest, no symposium of wit entire when the petulant wife with rolling pin proclivities were disregarded- Pro fessional humorists would be frequent ing the bread line, the editors of Judge and Life not to mention the Gamecock would develop cerebral hemorrhages and the linotype opera tors' appreciation of ludicrous effects wculd be restored to normal were these standbys subjected to a reversal of opinion. It is too much, ladie', to ask mere man to relegate to the waste basket subjects that have stood the test of time, themes that bear the hall mark of the nation's approval. It is suggested in retribution that one of the condemned females assemble a collection of wise cracks and snide remarks and address them to the Open Forum.
