MOORE DEPARTS LIFE (Continued from page one) 1866, so he was nearing his 62nd birth being graduated in 1887 he began a career in public schools and though he later went to the University facult he never lost his keen delight in secondary education at Spar.tanburg and at Cam den and the principal at Birmingham. biology, geology and mineralogp. Three years later he was named full professor of biology of which department he was the head at the time of his death. Twice Doctor Moore served as acting president of the University first upon the retirement of Major Henjamin sloan 1908-09 and again when Dr. S. C. Mitchell resigned to go to the Univer sity of Delaware 1913-14. He was chairman of the faculty 1907-08 and was dean of the institution 1909-13. Since 1914 he has devoted his entire -ime to the department of biology. le was recognized widely as distingiished in his field and in his death the University loses one of its most outstanding men.. Doctor Moore was a man of varied in terests. He didn'.t allow his profession to build a wall around him. lie w.s an ardent student and spent much time in his study, but with it all, he kept up his keen en'tuisiasm for other things. He farmed rather ardently. and paid personal attention to the dairying interests, which he only re cently gave up. He was a ruling elder in the First Presbyterian church, a Christian who practiced his religion in his every day life. Doctor Moore married in 1900, Miss Vivian May of Hale county, Alabama She, one brother Paul V. Moore, sec retary of the South Carolina State fair, and three sisters, Misses 1-larriett and Mary Moore of Spartanhurg and Mrs. Arthur Craig of Charlotte, sur vive. He also leaves a niece in C'dun hia, Mrs. W. J. Keenan, Jr., who for years made her home with the Moores. News of the death of Doctor M4oor_ day. He was the son of Col. Thomas John Moore. Houston, who became in later years a member of Voodrow Wilson's cabinet. Among his classmates and life long friends were some of South Carolina's most influential men of today. His in tellect and the anthority with which he spike were recognized both by stu dents and by fellow scienti-sts.
