Al thotigh the breaks were n Carolina's tavor the Seceders did some scrappy playing and gave the Gainecocks a run for their money. Despite the intense heat and early sea son form ot both sides, some flashy football was exhiited. L',rskrne has thse the best team this year she has had since the days of "Dode" Philhps, hav img had a crack freshman team the last two years, one of them state champions. No the victory shows that Carolina has a much stronger team than those of the last tew years. Carolina's backheld showed fine form but did not get the support of the line it should have had. 'Time after time Erskme would break through and smear plays before the runner could reach the line of scrimmage. And undcr thes cir ctnstances the ground that was gained shows that the backs are t'nusually strong this year. Zobel drew first blood of the season when he stopped around right end for the first touchdown. But this was all the scoring done the first halt. The playing on both sides after this was lifeless. Jake lodd also put a bug in his team's ear, tor they developed plenty of punch and drive during this halt. The third quarter was pretty much of a locked horn affair. \Wimberly, with beautiful interlerence, ran 3 yards for Carolina's second touchdown ini the beginniig of the fourth quarter. A few minutes later he picked up an l'rskiine fumble and rached (t) vards for the third touch down. ff1 . /obel, the fastest back in the state, did not reach his usual form although he played a good game and made a few nice runs. Ed Boineau relieved Zobel twice during the game and despite his light weight showed that brains and speed, an his punting ability wall make him out standing in the state. Captain Copper Wtas the mainstay in b)acking up the line and tackling. Hei directed the team and modestly played in st:ch a way that his playing was un noticed, the glory going to his running mates. 4i'ne up and summary: Carolina (19) Erskine (0) Rogers ............LE..Hambright Wolfe........................Tinkler Guarino ...........kG.......iBlankley J. 'lthey will see a team which will be somewhat lacking in weight, but what it lacks in weight will be more than attset by speed and smartness. The Gamecocks are being coached this year by Billy Laval whose teams at Furman University utring the last ten years have excited the admiration of tootball tans all over the South, and have annexed victories over some ot the greatest teams of the South, including the University of Georgia, Washington and Lee and ()l .\tiss. Laval became head coach at the Uni versity of South Carolina on J1anuary 1st, so that the present Carolina toot ball team is his hrst at the institution and his work is, therefore, being watched with great interest all over the South. 'i practice, the Carolina team has been showing muich of the smartness and speed which has eii characteristic of the Laval teams ior the past ten years. Chicago tans will also have the op porttnity of seeimg the tamous Laval "huddle." 'I lie Carolima coach is a great believer in psychology, and tis "huddle" which was origimated by him is intended to contuse the opposing team. He has made improvements in it this year, which he thinks will make it even more ettec tive. It is rather diticult to describe the "huddle", one has to see it to appreciate its ettectiveness. The Chicago fans will also see some thing entirely new in the way of tootball uniforms. Laval extends his psychology into the wearing apparel of his teams A R - ii Fr. *To prove Parker Duofold Is n pen o lifelong perfection, N3d we oifer to rnake 1040 good any decfect, 'ug" provided cornplete ren, is sent by the owner direct to the 4iomv with l0c for retuarn p,ostage and Insnrance. also. The Carolina uniforms are, to express it mildly, very fiashy. A local sports writer has described tinen as hav ing the appearance of a Christmas tree. The uniforms will insure the game of bemg a colorful atair. In the backheld for the Gamecocks, Carlisle Beall, who was probably one of the greatest Prep school players in the state, is beginning his hrst season as a varsity player at fullback. Last year on the freshman team, he literally ran wild. He is considered one of the greatest passers in the state. Zobel, the speed merchant of last years backheld, bids fait to have a wonderful season and Wimberly, who was a terror to opposing teams in the 1926 and 192/ seasons, but did not play last season be cause of a broken leg, looks mighty good im practice. Capt. Bill Looper, who is running the team, bids fair to make his last season on the squad his best. The line from end to end looks good.
