Slogan Into Effect at
Track Meet
FINAL OUTCOME IS 67 TO 59
Hornets Win Nine First Places
-Carolina Takes Five
And Seconds
"Beat Furman," a slogan that has
fallen from the lips of Carolina sup
porters for some time, was actually
carried into effect yesterday afternoon
when the Gamecocks defeated the
Hornets in a close track meet. The
last event determined the outcome
which was 67 to 59.
Furman copped nine first places and
Carolina took five, while there was a
tie for first place in pole vault. But
Carolina won second and third in al
most every event.
Zobel of Carolina and Lawton of
Furman were high point men with 15
points each, the former taking firsts
in the hundred, 220 and broad junmp,
while Lawton won the high hurdles,
discus and low hurdles.
The state record on the hundred
yard dash was equalled by Zobel when
he clipped off the distance in 10 sec
ends flat. One watch clocked him
at 9.8, but the slower time had to be
taken. Smith, Furman, again beat the
javelin record when he hurled the
stick 190 feet, beating the former rec
erd almost two feet.
, The distance races were the most
exciting of the (lay, Vincent of Fur
man winning the mile and Garrison of
Furman winning the two mile, both
races having gruelling finishes after
hard sprints.
At the beginning of the last event,
the broad jump. Carolina led the Hor
nets by one point, 59 to 58. However
the locals were not able to take the
lead in this event, getting only third
place, thus letting the Birds capture
the meet.

Furman Victorious
Over Carolina Nine
With Laney at the bat, five times
up and five hit following, three of
which were home runs, Furman de
feated the Gamecocks yesterday ai
ternoon on Manly field.
The game got away to a brisk start
but in late stages developed into a
farce. In the eighth inning Furman
Fcored six runs and in this frame
Laney went to the bat for the fifth
time to garner his fifth consecutive
hit. Laney was by far the outstanding
figure on the field and drew applause
from the stand each time he walked
to the plate.
The first inning was scoreless but in
the second Furman scored three tine;
on two home runs. Carolina drew
blood in the next but from that time
steadily lost ground. Two Carolina
pitchers were driven from the mound
within the first four innings and the
third, Riggins, was hit freely. Huff
went the nine rounds for Furman and
'allowed 12 hits, many being scattered.
