The Very Idea! By BuRToN E. SHOOK In this column last week I made favorable refereice to the political meth ods being empaoyed by a candidate for the presidency of the sophoniore class. Since that time I have been question.d as to why I endorsed the candidate. My endorsement was for the method and not for the person himself. Yours truly cares no: one whit who is elected to the presidenoy of the sophomore class, but he method which has been iiijected into the campaign is the most praiseworthy that has come this way in many a moon. If the freshman in question can help ilitroduce open politics on this campus. then lie will have made a great contribu tion to the life of the Universi y. In this week's Open Forum a budding critical genius (who hides his immense talent under a bushel by not signing his name) pretends 'o see beneath the candidacy of this "verdant" freshman. the subtle and wicked machinations oi some all-powerful Warwick, who is in exorably pulling the strings which wil catapult this dangerous freshman into a position of power. Admittedly the freshman is getting advice and aid from some one. as the Forum writer very, very cleverly points ou -. One is forced to ask : Since wh2n has the getting and taking of advice been put on the blacklist ? The detective powers of this mys tei ious writer of letters marks him as a sleuth of the old school. Scotland Yard will sign him up ere his stealthy step has descended the rostrum after getting his diploma, and then, woe to the underworld. Did I say that the letter writer was hiding his talent under a bushel? He is hiding it under a carload, with not even a vagrant cough to betray his royal whereabouts. Come forth Dan iel, where there are ilo lions, certainly not political ones. * * * * * * * * If the verbose gentlemen who write for the Open Forumi would curtail pro'iluction just a Ittle bit and write their say in fewer words, more room could he devoted to topics of campus wide interest. This remark. enthusiastic readers is not aimed at Hawkeye. et al. because the searching Iawkeye has been very cotnsiderate in his demands on space compared with others who have writ tenl. The point is. that if those who write letters to the Forumn would try to ex press themselves in simple language. uiderstandable to themselves as well as posible rea<lers. their effectiveness would be much greater. Most scribes spray their missives with Mr. Webster's choices- fmids and hope to give the impression that they are erudite, if niot thought ful. The edlitor niever tutrnis downi a Fo runm letter because. he' feels that the sttudenit body should have full opportunity for expression, as of course it should. But it is ani impiositiont 01n the editor to ask that most of his space lie given to a letter which could say the samec thing int a great deal fewver words. Moral: If you have som;etinmg to say, write it ;if you jtust watit to talk. hire a hall. * * * * * * * * The approaching elect ion of a May quteeni is a genitle remIindler that there repboses int thte conistitutioni of our grand( anid glorious studlent body a pro visioti that only jtuniors and setiiors arte el igible for' t his hionior. l,et me hia%ten to say~ that no fair heart ini either the freshman or sopho more class beats faster at my approach, or vice versa, whatever that mteants. Per sonially, I wouldn't care if the p)ractice were abolished anid a May king elect ed itistead; in fact-well, I'd rather, obviously I would. Without casting any aspersions on the beauties of the two upper classee onie might say that making the sehec tioni of May queen from those sources compulsory, decidedly limits the r'ange of choice. There is no very good rea son why such a ruling exists. A bit of groping brings a faint nmem ory of this clause having been inserted itn miy hahyconm sophomore days. Re-discovers' His Favorite Tobacco Charleston, W. Va., March 4, 1927 Larus & Bro. Co., Richmond, Va. Gentlemen: Recently istopped in a little village that consisted of about nine houses and a small hotel, which I entered. A little old man wearing a skull cap was seated in a rocking-chair smoking an enormous pipe. I had come to buy a can of Edgeworth, but when I caught a whiff of the tobacco he was smoking I changed my mind. The aroma of that tobacco was so delightful that I made up my mind right then and there that I wanted some of the same brand. regardless of the cost. I began with: "I beg your pardon, sir, but I came in to buy a can of to bacco, and I would like the same brand you are smoking if you don't mind telling me." He looked at me for a moment, grasped his pipe with one hand and said: "I'm smoking Edge worth. Would you like some?" Of course I did, and I secured a supply from the old fellow. The joke, of course, was on me, but I went on my way rejoicing. Yours very truly, Dr. John R.
