"CRAZY QUILT" DEMONSTA TION GIVEN FRIDA Y Coach Laval Has Made Wonder ful Progress With Carolina Team Already PRACTICE GAME PLAYED Wimberly, Beall, Zobel, Cooper, And Others Show Good Form Those of the student body who were at the spring practice game last Fri day ' were treated to a mess of "mid season form" football. The boys ap peared just a little green on the "Crazy Quilt" shift but seem to have adopted themselves to the hang of the thing and with a little more experience in the new style of play they should have the complicated intricacies down pat by the time King Football again ascends his throne. Coach seems to have worked wonders with the team in the short time that he has had them in hand and is to be congratulated on the spledid showing in the game. The two teams -were drawn from the var sity squad and were not merely the varsity and the scrubs. Both were fine on defense and the offense of the sup posedly better team was a little stronger than the other. Bob Wim berly seems to have improved with age -looks like the year's lay-off put him on edge and added a few pounds to his physique. Being heavier gives him more drive and (oes not seem to have slowed him (own even a little. He looked like the Race Horse of old. Carlisle Beall looked good to those who re member his (lays at Columbia High, running with that same old sureness and speed for which he is fondly yet sadly remembered by some of those who saw him in action against their own high school. Ed Zobel among the best of the "around-the-end" variety was a joy to behold. His running was of a -high order. Capt. Bill, was the same always-gets-his-man out in terferetice ian that the players on the opposing teais in the past have learned to fear. Ed Boinean proved a suprise whllen he showed up so well in the backfield, his former position being end. That boy can can punt and that's not all, he can run wi h the ball too He is expected to do some good work next year. His punts remind one of that faious punting of Bill Jeffords against Wake Forest a few years back. With Billy Laval supervising all athletics there will surely be something to work on, and the showing made by the gridiron warriors last Fri day, they should certainly start the year off right. - INKPOT - A NUMBE.R of meu on the baseball team will go to Augusta Saturday to see the New York Giants play Augusta. This will be very in teresting and the boys should get a line on the big league stuff. - INKPOT SO MUCH is said about college spirit among the students and the need for better college spirit at Carolina. Undoubtedly this is true and the students should take a much more active part in supporting athletics. They should attend all the games and root for Carolina. There is, however, an undercurrent present in the situation that has been overlooked. Do those that actually participate in the various sports have the pro per attitude? Of the twenty-five men out for the baseball team at the Uni versity of Florida, 16 don't smoke, four ?moke occasionally, and the remaining ones are by no means inveterate smokers, during the baseball season they all keep train ing. It appears that they have the spirit. A training table is offered for track and baseball. yet less than a half dozen men take advantage of this. Does each played give his best and pull for the success of the teams in all of the sports, even though he fails to make a place on the team himself? Isn't he con cerned imore with making the team than its success ? Then why does he want to iake the team? It is often because of the personal glory and not because of any especial love for the sport. What is the trouble ? It seems that the players need a little col lege spirit same as the student. froml his regular centerfield ostont either sho(rtshlop or the hot corner. POiR ERSKINE LEGETTE, Editor MEMORIES OF EARLY DAYS OF FOOTBALL Season of 1905 is Reviewed Back to Days of the Flying Wedge PLAYED FOUR GAMES Carolina Team, Coached By Christie Bennett, Whipped Several Teams Since football is back on the campus this spring and the aspirants for berths on the 1928 varsity are out every dayl working, we might let our thoughts drift back to the earlier history of football at Carolina. Way back in the flying wedge and the straight football days, Carolina was right there strutting her stuff. The season of 1905 started much later than the present seasons open as it did not begin until November 4. The opening game was with Davidson, played 'n Charlotte. This game appears to have been very close and an exciting ending with Carolina winning by the close score of 6 to 4. Since those clays the ways and think of as the days when the stu dents here were all man and women rarely crossed the campus, the ways of counting the score in football have changed. A field goal at that time was four points, and a touchdown was five points with a free kick for the extra point. The season was continued with South Carolina College playing Bing ham in Asheville, N. C. This game resulted in a tied score of 5 to 5. On November 17, we find Carolina playing a team we now consider an old rival, V. P. 1. The game was play ed at Roanoke, Va. Carolina put up 4 real scrappy game but lost by the score of 34 to 0. (one point less than last year.) "Foster playing left end ::id McKay playing right end played tile best game in their positions seen here in years, the V.P.I. backs could make no gains around their ends." SYLVAN BROS. In winding up Car(ilina's season the Gamecocks had that grand and glori ous feeling of ending a hard season of football by handing out an overwhelm ing defeat to the Citadel Bulldog on Thanksgiving day. The Citadel was in its first season of this great game and though fighting hard, went down in defeat before the well coached team of South Carolina College to the tune of 47 to 0. Carolina was coached by Christy lenet. "Holmes was the star for Carolina, McKay and Foster were in their best form, Croft at tackle played a good game."-The State. The names of McKay and Foster are well known in Columbia as some of the city's leading citizens. Also outstanding during the season was Heyward, (we all know him as Doc. Heyward.) Besides lending color to the team they will also serve to dazzle the op posing team and thereby aid the Gamecocks in executing some of the fast plays that Coach Laval is teach ing them now. Carolina is looking forward to the biggest football season yet, and the way things look at present these hopes will not be downed in the least.
