CHOOSES NON-RESISTANCE
Youthful Editor Satiries Antag
omists and Makes No Change
in Editorial Policy
Lawrence, Kans. (By New Student
Service)-Paul Porter, editor of the
Daily Kansas and contributing editor
of The New Student, may have read af
the Alabama prosecuting attorney wh-i
informed his constituents that they
might, with the law's protection, defend
theniselves from self-appointed vigil
antes in whatever vigorous manner they
saw fit.
However that may be, Porter, in an
editorial of advice to the freshmen,
gave utterance to this bit of heresy:
"The next time a blue-capped fresh
ma" resembling an animated sulphur
match is paddled by a member of the
council, 'K' club, or Sachem, we hope to
see him retaliate with the handiest weap
on available, invite the gaddler to warm
him other than his ocat-tails, and join
with his fellow classmen to grab the
encroacher by the scruff of the neck and
rinse him of his coqceit in the chilly
waters of Potter's lake. Then he may
be experiencing some knocks worth yel
ling and fighting for."
Porter's position immediately became
as that of a Darwinian who arises in a
backwoods Tennessee Methodist
church to make a brief for evolution.
pus started out for revenge. Porter,
The big burly men of the Kansas cam
warned that punishment was in store
for him, cancelled a journed to Kan
sas City, rather than spoil the fun of
the guardians of law an order. When
taken captive, he adopted a policy of
non-resistance, and non-cooperation.
refused to take his choice of punish
ment, and when ordered to climb out
of Potter's Lake, into which he had
been thrown, told his inquisitors that
having put him in, they might come
and take him out if they wished him.
A satirical editorial followed in the next
issue of The Kansan.
The student council president de-'
cried the lawlessness and placed the
blame for the ducking on a renegade
group, composed mainly o f athletes.
A student whose letter of protesc
against'the earlier editorial made him,
ccording to his own view, and acces
sory .before the fact, also denounced:
the vigiliantes and, cophpared them to
the fieshmen who refused tW wear their
caps.
Potter announced no charge in atti
tude toward hazing and promised fur
ther editorials attacks on the custom.
He declared himself "willing to tak..
punishment which he would advocate
for others," the Kansan reported.
