POO GONZALES FIRST EDITOR OF GAMECOCK Founded January 30, 166-Many Prminent Men an Staff BRILLIANT JOURNALIST South Carolina "Collegian," Now Called the "Carolibian" Founded in 1663 An investigation into the origin of the three campus publications, the "Gamecock, "Garnet and Black," and the "Carolinian" shows that eacch has enjoyed continuous publicaction since it's founding, and that a number of South Carolina's prominent citizens were members of the first staffs which sent the magazine, sheet or volume to press. Robert E. Gonzales was the first Editor-in-chief of The Gamecock, which made its first appearance Jan uary 30, 1908. It was published three times a month by the literary societies who had an equal number of represen tatives on the staff. Members of the editorial staff were: W. H. James, R. M. Cooper, V. E. Rector, G. W. Reaves, J. H. Sullivan, Randolph Murdaugh and T. C. Calhoun. Roy Webster was business manager and J. C. Massey was his assistant. From an editorial of Mr. Gonzales in the first issue, the following will be of interest to Carolina students and Ca rolina supporters in general: "Now, the paper will be a small af fair at first; moreover it won't be any thing pretentious, or anything to brag about; but it is, and will continue to be, the official organ of the Athletic Asso ciation of the University, the Ypung Men's Christian Association, the two societies, and the whole student body. It will represent the spirit of Carolina as exemplified by The Gamecock; the spirit of "stick-at-it-iveness," of fight ing against odds for the sheer love of the thing, the spirit of '03, that out of a student body of 175 men produced a football team that defeated tw of the best in the South, and gained gary for its college, the spirit of "never ay die" that for a generation has been called alike on campus, diamond, gridiron and track-the Carolina Spirit." The Garnet and Black was first pub lished in 1899, the University then being the South Carolina College. Its firit volume contains this dedication: "To our Alma Mater-whose son3 have for a century exerted a most po tent influence in shaping the destinies both of the state and the nation, this volume is dedicated in recognition of her past services, her present worth, and her future promise." The board of editors consisted of: John Gordon Hughes, editor-in-chief; assistant editors, john Eldred Swear ingen, Vivian Mardount Moses, James Evans, Jr., Anne Fayssoux Davis, W. Pearsons Murphy, Beulah Gertrude Calvo, Charles Thomson Haskell, John Cantzon Foster, Wilmont Louis Mc Cutcheon, Lueco Gunter, William Hughes Nicholson and James Thomp son. The business managers were: William Henry Verner and Thomas Hagood Gooding. The oldest campus publication, the Carolinian, was at first known as the South Carolina Collegian, and was first published in 1883. Later in October, 1888, its name was changed to the University Carolinian. Fitz Hugh McMaster was the editor in 1888, and A. M. Aiken, Jr., was the business manager. Each literary socie ty was represented and members of the staff were: Clariosophic, J. R. Fairey and August Kohn; Euphradian, Harry Alexander Brunson, and B. McLauch lin.
