HOOSIER UNIV PREPARES MEN AS POLITICIANS Irregularities in Nomination and Forgery of Names Fea ture Elections DAILY PAPER DENOUNCES Indiana University Elections Ap. pear to Have Professional Touch (By New Student Service) If the Duvalls and McCrays are es sential to Indiania, the State should take comfort in the knowledge that for each public official who is sent'to pri son, a dozen successors are coming out of college, fully versed in the machinery and manipulation that in the Hoosier territory spells political success, and oc casionally, eventual imprisonment. The University of Indinia has just ex perienced a student election that con tained all the trickery known to politi cians professional and amateur. In the light of recent happenings in the state, it may well Be said that the University is an admirable training ground for future citizenship. If experts mani pulators complain that finesse was lack ing in the student work, they should withhold judgment for a time, because it is safe to say that the depths or the heights, as Duvall and McCray might say, have not yet been reached. The Daily Student, which could not. shake the sons of new Tammany, even with complete exposure, explains that each year campus politics have become more corrupt, and .that each year it seenis the bottom of the scale has been reach ed. With this endless process, then, it may be predicted that whatever finesse is now lacking soon will be added. The caucuses and such trimmings are known to many campuses, and while more spirited at Indiania, probably, than elsewhere, they became insigni ficant in the light of latei events. Out standing in the University election were these happenings: Nine of twelve signatures on a sopho. more nominating petition were forger ies. The nominee for sophomore presi dent was expelled from school two dayI before the election, while the nominee for treasurer had never entered the university. Check of credits f all candidates in dlicated that three were not membe:s of the classes in which they sought office. Several persons obtained twelve sig *natures to a list of candidates for freshman offices, then erased the names of the nominees and substituteil a new slate without informing the signers of the petition. Politicians, for reasons known only to themselves, filed names of persons who fiad previously refused to run and, to add strength to their tickets, added names of persons whom they had not consulted. Women students were coerced into voting for particular tick ets by threats of exclusion from various activities. The Daily Student did everything possible to expose the corruption, giv ing prominence to names and hiding nothing. It shouted against stupidity and criminal practice, yet the boys went merrily on their way, electioneered t the polls, sent out whips to round up the party men and women, cast ballots for those who didn't vote,-and for some who wanted to found at the pols that their votes had alre~ady been eni tered. One month's effort was represented in the organization. Can the erstwhile public servants claim .more efficacv' among their forces? And with custom-. ary forgetfulness, a final editorial be rates the politicians, and the campus cettles down to preparing for the next election, and some more good Indiania mud. JAMES G.
