Sophomores-Friday, 3:30. Juniors & Seniors-Friday, 4:30. The hockey tournament will be held during the last week in November and the first week in December. It is im portant that all players report for the practices next Week so they can be lined up for positions, and that class managers can be elected. - usc Y.W.C.A Convenes at Camp Laf-a-Lot Misses Kirton, Muller, Hughes, Shepherd, Taylor and John son Represent Univ. A convention of unusual interest in Y.W.C.A. circles will be held this week-end at Camp Laf-a-Lot. Among the numerous speakers of note who are to be present are Dr. W. E. Uphaus of Nashville, Tenn., Miss Stella Scurlock of the national board of Y.W.C.A.'s, and Dean Mary T. Scudder of Win throp College. There will be forty delegates to at tend the convention, two girls from Lander being guests on Friday of the Y.W. girli' at the Woman's building. Besides the principal addresses there will be a number of groups for infor mal discussion of problems that are present in every college. Delegates from the University Y.W. are Misses Edna Kirton, Virginia Muller, Willie Jo Hughes, Eloise Shepherd, Virginia Taylor, and Ida Johnston. Miss John ston has recently returned from At lanta' where she went as a delegate from Carolina to the National Y.W. convention. ---usc--. The initiation of the new members of the Damas club will be held in Melton hall on Monday evening at 7:15. BALL TELLS OF ONE REMINISCENCE Members of Old News and Cour. igr Stqff Borrowed Before Each Week's Pay Day FUNERAL NOTICE NEEDED Exclamations of Delight Call-for Profuse Apologies From Staff Man While reminiscing recently, Dr. W. W. Ball, former dean of journalism at Car6Ilna and now editor of the Chac leston News and Courier, told the fol lowing story: The practice in the News and Courier office in older days, was for members of the staff, their pay envelopes having been exhausted by the middle of the week, to appropriate to themselves sometimes a half or a dollar that came in at night, )uttiRg a due bill in the drawer with the night letters for the business office. The business manager took the amount of these due bills from the next Satur day's pay envelopes. A prominent business man of Charles ton, who about 1888 or 1890 was night office boy tells me the story. It was a Friday night, and uncommonly dull. Two members of the staff were in the office, one of whom afterwards became a well known Methodist minister and the other a 41stinguished professor, both were "sttapped", it was growing late, not a penny had trickeld in, not a "want" or "iost" ad, and going -to bed hungry, without any refreshment, seemed their fate. Just outside, in Broad streeet and around the corner, in East Bay, were refreshments in abundance, cheap, too, in those days-if one had the price. Never had there been such a night 1 o'clock, and not so much as a quarter dribbling in. Two gentlemen of solemn mien ap peared in the doorway of the cuddyhole where the young man, later to be pro fessor, toiled, complaining across the half-partition to the minister in training (though he did not know it) of the barrenness of the night. IMr.- ", said one of the men hold ing out a slip of paper with a neatly written funeral notice, a doilar in green back and a silver half dollar, "poor Mrs. Melkins passed away at half past eleven o'clock." "Thank Gawd I Thank Gawd I -Oh, ah, er, I, beg your pardon, I do beg your pardon," the newspaper man shouted, and stammeringly apologized to the amazed visitors. After they had retired, the refreshments came. -usc Proofs of Invitations Ready in January Proofs of the senior invitations will come out on January 10th, according to announcement of Thomas Wofford, the chairman of the Invitation committee. Nominations for these scholarships were made last June and elections for the same were held at the meeting of the faculty on Tuesday, October 18. In conferring these scholarships, it is required that the scholar shall have been a member of the University for at least one collegiate year, and shall have made at least a pass grade on each study of the year of appointment Those selected for the current year and the scholarships they have won are as follows: First Hampton-Wilbur C.
