BILL COOPER The Old Lineds felt the power of his line thrusts Saturday. MARYLAND DEFEA TS BIRDS BY BIG SCORE Carolina Line Holds for Three Downs on Two Yard Line MADE VALIANT STAND Old Liner Backs Tear Garnet and Black Defense to Shreds Maryland insisted on overdoing them selves last Saturday and decidedly upset the dope concerfing the actual score of the contest. 'llhey were due to win, but no one thought they would by so im'pressive a count. Twenty-six to nothing, it was. The Old Liners manipulated an ex tremely well screen'ed double pass very successfully. In the initial quarter they pushed the Gamecocks to within an un comfortable proximity of their goal line. Kessler (whom fans will remember by his excellent playing in Columbia last fall) circled right end for 28 yards, and placed the oval on Carolina's two yard mark. At this point the Carolinians made a valiant and also brilliant stand and al most made good. Thomas hurled his bulk at the center of the Garnet and Black line and achieved half his purpose -namely that he came within one yard of the goal. Snyder tried and was stopped at the scrimmage line. He made a second attempt and was again ham mered down by the sturdy Carolina litesmen. Then, as Carolina folk were nearly ready to believe that their team had again pulled the stunt that it is famous for, Thomas shot across the goal for a touchdown. Snyder scored another touchdown be fore the half ended, and Coach Curley Byrd ran in his second string team. Pugh, in the second half made the long est run of the game, racing 50 yards for a touchdown. In the final period Carolina came very near scoring and fell only ten yards short. Zobel passed to Farr and the gain was for 40 yards. The ball was on the 20 yard line. Two passes ground ed and the Birds were penalized five yards. A pass, Zobel to Griffin brought the team 13 yards nearer their goal. A line drive wvas halted on the ten yard lin~e, and Pugh kicked out of danger. Thomas scored on a pass in the clos ing minutes of play after the Carolina line had held for three downs on the four yard line. Snyder paved the way for the final touchdown by gaining 40 yards on a cross buck through tackle. Pritchard Chosen to Lead Reserve Team "Serub" Team Goes to Bamberg to Take on Fast Prep Outfit Carolina's reserves journey to Bam berg this afternoon to battle with the fast Carlisle prep team. Edward Pritchard was chosen to lead the sur plus Garnet and Black warriers. Mr. Pritchard was elected at the sconclu slon of practice yesterday. According to those is authority, "'Ed" is one of the best gridsters that has appeared on ,the Carolina campus for quite some .time. but Is unae to p ay fr te ni I NKPOT1 HISTORY DID NOT repeat itself last Saturday. The old liners were dop ed to win, but certainly not by such an overwhelming score. Their perfectly executed plays kept the Carolinians guessing. - INKPOT MARYLAND HAS a wonderful ma chine this season. Some of the varsity men say that the team was the most powerful they had ever seen. It is possible that the Col lege Park boys may land the con-. ference toga. - INKPO CAROLINA FOUGHT tremendously hard and deserved better. But with a crippled team and in foreign territory, such a team as the Old Liners boast, they did not do so badly after all. -INKPOT NOT A SINGLE Carolina man was on hand to witness the contest. Sev eral fellows left on Friday preced ing the game, but their car was in tercepted by a telephone post at High Point. We wonder if the town was the only "high" thing around. - INKPOT THE VARSITY has been getting in some mighty good work this week in preparation for the Virginia game tomorrow. They have had one or two scrimmages with the freshman team. - INKPO - THE UNIVEIRSITY of Virginia was beaten last Saturday, 33 to 0, by the Bulldogs of Georgia. In Co lumbia last year the Virginians whipped Carolina by the margin of two field goals, both coming from the toe of Capt. Mackall. - INKPO - STONEY'S BIDDIES will receive their baptism of fire tomorrosv when they meet the Wofford Ter rier Pups. The rat team is an un known quantity as yet but Burnet Stoney can be relied upon to bring out a well rounded eleven. - INKPOT - ONE OF THE best known of the new men is an old favorite with Co lumbians - Carlisle Beall. Beallzz was captain of the famous Columi bia high state champions in 1924. He has been te Carlisle fitting school for two years. - INKPOT - COACH "ROOSTER" McFadden has sounded the call for cross country aspirants to appear Monday. Th;s is the first season in several years that a cross country team has bee:i attempted. Eugene Keels of Lynchburg, is captain of the track team. He is a star two-miler. - INKPOT - AS A PANACEA for gridiron ills one might suggest the national footb.ill rules committee make it conven ient not to meet for a year or two. Trhe new rules that were institut ed at the last conference don't senm to have helped the game to any visible extent. Constantly changing rules bewilder those who are not close followers of the pig skin sport, but who enjoy seeing a good game now and then. -KINKPOT - THE SCRUBS, under the direction of "Si" Seideman, are in Bamberg to day for a practice game with the Carlisle eleven. The "third string ers" have been stacking up handi ly with the varsity of late. Wire Sent Lightsey and Team in Virginia The folllowing telegram has been sent to Coach Lightsey and his Game cocks, who play Virginia tomorrow. "Give 'em Hell Gamecocks-you~ gotta win-pulling for you." The Student Body, By Tom Craig, Pres. versity as he stared for Union College in Schenectedy, N. Y., for two years. The reserves, coached by "Si" Seide man, a star for several years, will pre sent a formidable aggregation th 't shoum' give the prep school the fight of the lives. Coach Seidenman plans to use Fowles at center, Riggin and Stone at guards, Pitts and B. Smith at tackles, BIDDIES AND TERRIER. PUPS STAGE BATTLE Carolina Frehme= to Open 1927 Schedule on Melton Field Saturday BIDDIES SHOW UP WELL Many Old High School Stars to Be Noted in Line-up Carolina Team Carolina's frosh eleven will officiallv open the 1927 season tomorrow with the Terrier pups of Wofford as their opponents. A number of former high school stars will be noted in the Biddies line up and W offord has also a number of South Carolina's best known. The Biddies have only been at work since the opening of school and can hardly be expected to have a well rounded team after so little unified practice. The line-up tomorrow will be drawn from the following men: ends-Boin, eau, Shand, Gressette, and Holloway; tackles-McElveen, Morrison, Christo pher, Riley, or Leschinskey; guards Brown, Zimmerman, or Moore. Cen ter-Weinstein or Leardo. Backs-Beall, quarter; Epps, Hughes, Matheny, Blount, Asbill. Something About Them Beall needs no introduction to old Carolina supporters. He is a terrific line driver and a marvelous passer. Boineau is an all-southern end front Columbia high. He made his biggeit reputation last year. McElveen is a large, powerful tackle from Olantd. Moore is also from Olanta. Shand was captain of Columbia high last year. He has beehi shifted from tackle to end. Weinstein is an an all-state end from New Jersey. Zimmerman is a Yankee and is displaying considerable drive at guard. Morrison hails from Beaufort, "the Little City by the Sea." "Bully" Matheny won the high scho3l half mile championship year before last and the Pickens boys say he is :an A. No. 1 gridiron performer. Bill Hughes, of Columbia, has the nickname of "racehorse." Eppes is from Lake City and played for Bailey Military In stitute last season. Leardo is another of the New Jersey ites and rated the second all-state eleven there. Christopher is a hard hitting tackle from Easley. Holloway is a Porter man and will probably hol. one of the ends. -usc Small Group Goes to See Players Off A small crowd of students, with the University brass band in the forefront, noisity escorted the Gamecock varsity squad, 23 strong, to the railway statioi yesterday afternoon to give them at rousing sendoff as they entrained for Charlottesvills, Va., where tomorrow they are to battle wvith the Cavaliers of the University of Virginia. South Carolina ha s never won a game fronm the Virginians, but Light sey's men have high hopes of turning the trick in the coming contest. The Cavaliers (10 not dlisplay as impressive a team as they did last year. The final score of the~ 1926 contest was 6 to 0 against Carolina. However it came only after a bitterly fought game and the Old Dominian warrior s did not show a very marked superiori ty over the Palmetto state lads. The lineup will be virtually the sanme with the exception of two marked changes. Windus will probably start at left end, as Buster Holcombe is still somewhat under the weather as a re suIt 6f rough usage in the Maryland fracas. Joye may take one of the guard placeq. Men miaking the trip are: Captain Wingfield, Cooper, Rogers, Zobel, Joye, Keels, Windus, Holcombe, Thomas, Wolfe, Guarino, Stoddard, Hall, Prier-, Dertick, Watson, Fulmer, Pita, Swink, Magill, Griffin and Melton.. Coach Lightsey, James G. Driver, and James Coggeshall will accompany the team. at quarter, Adams and Glowka at halves and Pritchard at full, to open the game. He is also carrying Fitch, Lightsey, Hendricks, Atkinson, L. Wal ker, Thornton, Wingard, Clark, H. Wal ker, Verner, Morrison, Finley an-1 Nance. T. H. Briggs, manages Wyill ae company the team.
