Ye galley boy has just undergone a twenty-four hour fast and according to him, fasting is analagous to ice, it isn't all it's cracked up to be. * * * 9 * It's a great life if you don t weaken, but who wants to be a strong man. One of Carolina's main stays in the back field has refused to go to Virginia saying that he needs the time for his studies. The gentleman should be commended on his action for it seems that there is one man on the campus who realizes the purpose of college. "Judge," the Diogenes of the campus, running around with his ighted lamp, seems to be unable to distinguish between truth and circumstantial evidence. The Garnet tand Black warriors are expected to return to the campus chanting "Carry Me Back to Ole Virginny." Striped suits seem to predominate on the campus this year, they have long been in vogue out at "the free hotel on the Congaree." ** * * *. The biggest moron in captivity is the one who writes anything to any two women at the same time. Woman was the first associated press, this like the spot on the window pane, can be taken two ways. "Dollar bills will be made much smaller," says a finan cial magazine. Hurray I Maybe the folks at home can manage to squeeze more than one in' an envelope at a time. Some have said that the co-eds are more beautiful this year than ever before, we can at least say that they are - 'nore "colorful."~ "Here comes my old horse," said one Carolina student, pointing out a co-ed, when asked why he called her that, he replied, "whenever she gets 'Burnett's' on her mind she just 'nags' me to death." One henna haired co-ed has the heinous habit of "rub blng down" the professor after crass, one can also rub down one's grade in the same manner. Skirts seem to be getting shorter and shorter every year--given time, coming to college will soon be a positive pleasure. If anyone has any "spurs" to hand In, they will be welcomed like a long lost brother-the line forms on the right. With the appearance of so many Greek letter f rats on the campus, college "lingo" will soon sound like a conven *tion of candy kitchen magnates. On Prench professor came into a French class this mo anud Immdaeystarted speaking French. Well, * * * C . The footbaf! team left for Its trip with the cheers of the studeunt body ringing In their ears and with the prayers of those who were not ftate.. .en...h to go t te trin Requiescat in Pa4e Whn cheeriAg gets worse, 'Carolina will furnish It. Yesterday afternoon a miserable h*ndful of enthusiastic freshmen aqcompanied our football team to the station in what was to have been a demonstrative send-off to the Virginia game. Instead of the huge crowd expected, 'a thin line (doing its best, it must be said), wended its way there and back The sight must have been more disheart ening than heartening to Carolina's athletes. The trouble seems to lie in a total lack of school spirit and an abundance of pure inertia. Ignorance cannot be pleaded as announcemets were made in chapel and posted on the bulletin boards. The cheerleaders made every at tempg to gather a crowd. The student body as a whole shows all the enthusiasm and interest which might be expected of Rin.Tin-Tin. Apathetic freshmen are unable to derive any inspiration from disinterested upperclassmen, who should know better. The creed of "letting George do it" seems to be unani mously subscribed to. And yet, the ones who are the last, if ever, to get in snake dances or go to pep meetings are the first to denounce both coach and team when a game is lost. Football teams need more than natural ability and expert coaching to win games. They need that contagious pep and confidence which come only from loyal students who are giving their best and giving it freely. If yesterdays exhibition be an example, school spirit is fast disapRearing. But The Gamecock cannot believe that this condition is chronic and looks forward hopefully to the next pep meeting, -the next snake donce and the next football game. -usc Homecoming Day Next Saturday, October 15, will be the first homecom ing day that Carolina has had since the World War. Noth ing definite has been planned but "Pap" Early has ex pressed the hope that all alumni who are able will be here. With the advent of Mr. Early, The Gamecock feels that the Alumni association is to become a real, effective organi zation, with its interests closely bound up with those of Carolina.' Carolina needs her alumni and feels her alun) need her. Mr. Early has the winning uersonality and friendly attitude so necessary in alumni work. His long years of coaching have made him favorably known throughout the State and The Gamecock confidently predicts much success for the Alumni association under his direction.
