CHI CIRCLE IS NAME OF CHAPTER (Continued from page one) Honorary members consist of all those not included in the active or as sociate membership, wh ether elected from the alumni of the institution or not. Character is the primary considera tion for members in the fraternity. No person is eligible for membership until he has had at least one year of resi dence in the institution where elected and shall possess at least junior stand ing. The method of checking membership qualifications is called the Honor Sche dule. This schedule serves as a gene - ral model for the circles and gives the alumni an understanding of the system of rating. The schedule is divided into two divisions, major and minor, with these divisions divided into two classes each. No standard point system is used but each candidate should have at least one major campus honor before he is taken into the fraternity. Caiffpus honors, which are listed in the Omicron Delta Kappa handbook ai major honors, class A, are: President of student government, president of athletic association and president of non-athletic association. Under major honors, class B, are list - ed: captains and managers of major sports; editors-in-chief and business managers of dramatic and musical clubs and other major activities; presi dents of junior and senior classes; president of Y.M.C.A.; president oi Cotillion board; chairman June week committee; among first four in scholar ship. As the offices of different campuses are called by different names there are some names in this list that are not represented on the Carolina campus. A close study of the different offices above will reveal that although some of the offices named are not found on the University campus, offices with thw same duties are here but are knowvn by other names. In the minor dlivision, class A. the list is: president sophomore or fresh man classes; cap)tains and managers of minor sports; major letter man for two years; first assistant managers of ma jor sports; heads of various minor so cial or college activities; secondary of ficers in major non-athletic activities, providing position is merited and not honorary. Under the minor division, class D. are: minor class officers; letter men and active membership in non-athletic organizations for at least two years. DEAN BALL H AS SERVED ST AT E IN. JOURN ALISM BEGAN WORK IN LAURENS A Native South Carolinian Re ceived His Education at Carolina and Virginia The life and work of Dr. William Watts Ball, dean of the school of Journalism, has had as an ever in creasing purpose service to the citizens of our state. This service has found its expression chiefly in journalistic activity and, moQr.g recently, 'in in structing those who seek to enter th' profession through the avenue of col lege preparation. Dr. William S. Currell, Dean of the Graduate School, initiated in Omicron Delta Kappa at Wash ington and Lee University. Dr. Ball is a native South Carolinian. He wa:. born near Laurens, then Laui ensville, December 9, 1868. He was the son of Beaufort and Eliza Watts Bail. Such educational facilities as were af forded by local schools, Dr. Ball avail ed himself of. He came to South Caro lina College and received the Bache lor of Arts degree with the class of 1887. Dr. Ball returned to the college for graduate study during the sessions 1888-89. In the summer of 1890 he studied law at the University of Vir ginia. In various capacities Prof. Ball- has served on many of the newspapers of this state as well as in other states. He began his work in his chosen field as editor of the Laurens Advertiser. He then woriced with such papers as the Columbia Journal, 'Charleston Evening Post, and The Greenville News. All these papers, needless to say, bear an honorable position in the history of South Carolina journalism. After working for some time on The Green ville News, Dr.. Ball went to the state of Pennsylvania as a reporting editor for the Philadelphia Press. This was in 1898. Later he served as city editor for two years with the Jacksonville, (Fla.) Times. Dr. Ball has done his work here in South Carolina and has not gone to outside states where he could have probably secured more rapid advance ment and greater compensation. En tering the journalistic field with the spirit of a crusader he has maintained all the vigor of his enthusiasm to the present day. Famous for his articles on politics and other imminent prob lems confronting the citizen Dr. Ball has besides covered practically all fields of ordinary writing in the news col umns. Dr. Ball has been recently elected to the position of editor of the Charles.cn News and Courier. We trust that in the future it may be our good -foi:une to have Dr. Ball again in our midst.
