Miss From Brunson High Use "The Little Rebel" As Her Subject The state high school declamatiot contest was won by Lamus Sullivan o: Anderson last night in the Universit3 of South Carolina chapel, taking as hi! subject, "Shall the Statue of Lee Stan( in the Hall of Fame." "The Arena Scene of Quo Vadis spoken by Carlisle Smiley of Lake City won second place, "America foi Americans" by Frank DuBose of Nich ols high, winning third place. The other speakers in the boys con test and their subjects were: Nige League of Parker high of Greenville "The American Flag;" Joe Adams o Rock Hill, "A call to State Patriot, isni;" James Culbertson of Columbia "A Mess of Pottage ;" Earl Durham o Smoaks, "The Influence of a Grea Southerner;" J. Isaac Copeland o Clinton, "The Curse of South Caro lina;" and Leonard Rutland of Willov Consolidated school of Norway, "Thq Undying Challenge. In the girls' contest the audience sa patiently for over 20 minutes while thi judges conferred. Finally the judge: came in from a nearby room wher< they had been in conference and thei decison was sent to the front but W P. Blackwell, secretary of state and on of the judges was asked to come for ward and announce the results of thi judges conference. The girls' contest was won by Mis Annie Lee Roberts of Brunson hig1 school, speaking in the auditorium o Columbia high school and having a her subject, "The Littlest Rebel. Mis Mabel Badley of Columbia hign. we second place with the speech, "Th First Christmas Tree," third place go ing to Miss Margie Morgan of Thori well Orphanage, having as her subjec "The Soft Spot in 666." The other speakers in the girls con test and their subjects were : Miss Eve lyn Kaminsky of Lamar. "The Finge of God;" Miss Lena Miles Weaver c Anderson, "Ashes of Roses;" Miss Bes Tilman of Bennettsville, "The Littleb Rebel;" Miss Margaret Bennett Greer, "The Yellow Butterfly:" Mis Alma Varnadore of Great Falls, "Th Going of the White Swan;" Miss Eli zabeth Wiggins of Holly Hill. "Th Death Disk." At the boys contest. James F Spann, president of the South Carr lina high school league, presided. Jud ges were: Governor John G. Richard Fitz Hugh McMaster, and Edwin Bel ser. WV. H. WVard, superintendent of thi Walterboro schools, presided at thi girls contest. Mrs. J. B. Green. Mr: 0. Y. Owings, and W. P. Blackwve1 :ecretary of state, servedl as judges. -U.S.C. Biology Students to Take Trip to Coas The advanced students of the biolk gy departments plan to leave Thurs day, May 12th, for Pawley's Islami where they will make their annum study of marine fauna and flora. Every spring these trips are takel by the advanced students in biology fc the purpose of studing the marini forms, an advantage which otherwis he impossible. The trip includes class (es in zoology, botany and ornitholog3 The 'students follow a dlefinite sche dule while on the trip, They will b dhivided into separate classes. Damas Club To Give Ball Tonight Among the social affairs of the sea son will be the May ball given by the Damas club tonight in the University gymnasium. Tic gymnasium - will be decorated in pink and white, the club colors. The Gamecock orchestra will play and punch will be served throughout the evening. The invitations read as follows: The Damas Club of the University of South Carolina, May Bail, Friday evening. May the sixth, nine thirty to one thirty, University gymnasium. Chaperones will be Dean Dillard, Miss Helen Smith, and Professor and Mrs. Yates Snowden. -u.s.c. Miss Alicia Davidge Marries Hazelhurst Miss Alicia Hayne Davidge, for two years assistant to the University libra rian, Saturday evening was married to l George Edward Hazelhurst of Char leston. the ceremony being periormed in Trinity church. The bride is the daughter of Martin , Davidge of New York and the late Alicia Hayne Davidge. She, as well as the bridegroom, is widely connected in South Carolina. The maids and other members of the court formed an aisle on each side of the steps, and the Queen walked to her throne, where kneeling, she was crown ed by Dr. Douglas with a crown of whole pearls. "I have the great honor," said Dr. Douglas as he placed the crown upon her head, "of crowning you May Queen of the University of South Carolina." She then took her place in the throne chair which was draped with green velvet. A curtain of royal blue was draped behind the throne. The dais, formed of seven steps. was covered with white. Josephine Griffin, dressed in a danc ing frock of blue and gold, did a spring dance before her majesty and Miss Emily Guerry sang a spring song. The Queen and her maids left the throne to form a receiving line. After the reception a dance was given in their honor in the gymnasium. which was decorated with garnet and black. A large crystal ball and varied colored lights carried out the decorations. The Gamecocks played a program of dance music and several no-break wa.t zes and a grand march added to the festivity of the occasion.
