Track Tennis BIRD TRACKMEN LOSE TO "P.C." IN FIRST MEET Hogrefe Leaps 23 Feet 11 1-4 In hes to Smash State Record in Broad Jump TWO MILE IS CLOSE RACE Vicious Wind Whips Over P. C. Track Causing Much Trou ble to Runners Despite the loss of two main stars on the eve of departure for Clinton, the Carolina track team gave P. C. some thing to worry over, though they were beaten, by a decisive score. The final I count was 88 to 46. A biting, whipping wind swept over the track all afternoon, offering so much resistance to runners of both teams that fast times were virtually impossible. The usually flawless and smooth cinder track was heavy and rough due to a hailstorni on, the precceding day. The feature of the afternoon was RoY Hogrefe's leap of 23 feet, 11 1-4 inches in the broad jump. He was probably aided by the strong wind which blew at his back, but notwithstanding, his jump was the longest that has been made in a palmetto pit in many a day. Hogrefe also finished first in the 100 and 220-yard sprints. Max Rubeistein took third in the last named run and second in the hundred. The first long race on the program, the mile, was taken by Roberts in fairly good time. Timmo,ns nosed out Thonas in the high hundles, and the Carolina man also took second place over the lower sticks. The quarter-mile was a pretty race, Floyd Thomas winning with yards to spare . The two mile was a desperate, I gruelling battle for' the entire eight laps. Keels and Siiberman alterhnated with Whiteside of Presbyterian in fighting for the lead. At the lower curve on the last lap the three were bunched to gether. Gene Keels broke away from the group and it looked as if le was going to come out first. However, the P.C. man made a last second spurt and won by inches. Power Rogers had little difficulty in negotiating the har at elevei feet and the Presbyterian didn't have a look in 01r4 tile plo;c vault. Slim Carson threw the discus more than 117 feet and won first place. Shand tied Timmons for first place in the high jump.
