FIELD HO,USE
IS NAMED FOR
SAMUEL BURKE
Many Names Suggerted But the
Faculty Decides to Ilonor
University Reformer
CONVERTER OF ATHLETES
New Science Hall and Canteen
Also Named-May Honor
"Cyrus" Young
At a meeting of the faculty and the
board of trustees last night it was de
cided to niame the new auditorium,
located at Sumter; and D:vine streets,
"Sani Burke Hall."
Although several names, such as Mc
Fadden stadium, Bocock lHouse, aild
Jazz Hall, after otir gre.:' tullback,
Jaskewiecz, were i-igge:,ted. it was fin
ally decided, after mucli heated argu
nient, to name it aft,r the great re
former.
It is thought that Mr. Burke is de
serving of this honor for his untir'n
efforts to foster Christmas athletics on
the campus and to convert all athletes
to the Y.M.C.A.
At the same meeting it was decided
to honor South Carolina's new ch'ef
executive by calling the canteen the
"Richard's Canteen," as it is never
open on Sunday.
"Teeple Temple" is the name chosen
for the new science hall. This name
was first proposed in a letter from the
senior engineering class. It was sug
gested that it be called Mahaffey col
lege, but Teeple Temple soundedi more
euphonious. Dr. Currell suggested
this as being in keeping with Mr.
Teeple's proclivities.
Time was taken out here by the
faculty to explain "Euphonious" an,]
"proclivities" to Prof. Waterfall.
A petiton was read from the L.av
school to change the name of Petigru
college to "Cy Young college" after
that learned scion of the law.
The faculty accepted this unanimous
ly and voted to set up a bronze tablet
inscribed:
"CY YOUNG"
"More learned than Socrates;
More modest than Edmunds
Chaste as Diana,
Meek as Nelly Frierson."

'HEAVY' LESTER
TO WED PRINCE
OF HER DREAMS
PRINCE OFF HIGH HORSE
Met Prince of Whales at Ideal
and Woaed Him With
Anatomy
Congratulations are in order. Since
the announcement of the engagement
of Miss Evelyn Lester to the Prince of
Whales, there has been a flurry of ex
citement on the camptus. Althoughi
Carolina boasts such celebraties as
Johnnie Pate, Trom Craig, and Sydney
Burns, the mammalian prince is to be
considered an acquisition.
The marriage is the ctlmination of a
delightful romance. l,ester's Ideal met
the prince while he was visiting her
theater several months ago. Interesteel
is zoology as she is, it was quite nat
ural for her to weave herself into th
heart of the prince through tihe dlis
cussion of whale anatomy instead of,
as one often hears, through his stowm
ach,.even though this wvorthy p)art
played so important a p)art in Jlonah'
life.
Every (lay one see's the petite form,
Evelyn; scurrying about the campus,
bubbling over in the enthuiasm of her
happjiness. Plans for the wedding are
going steadhily fo-nvardl. Evelyn has
completed a design for a hiandkerch'ef,
andl necvs has reached America that th.'
prince is now h)are on the pedal ext re
miut.mes in order to care for the Pair of
sox that lhe always wears, which, be
cause of thiefr long, arnd faithful ser
vice, have conme to be regardled as an'
he'rloom.
Although her dlreams are htuge, 1,es
tre's Ideal is con6ident that she and the
prince will occupy very little space. In
viewv of this, Jimmy Driver's office has
b)een scouIred andl nut grass planted in
fi-ont of the (ddoor.
Dr. Douglas, who is to be ringbearer,
is making dlaily trips to Aunt Celia
who is making the wvhite satin suit

The girls at the dormitory will be
glad to learn that Miss Thelma Lock

Miss M. E. White. Miss White as
planning an extended tour abroad this
summer and Miss Lockman is to have
charge of the cafeteria during summer
school.
Miss White states that Miss Lock
man is progressing rapidly with her
course and thinks by the last of h a
term she will he capable of overseeing
the cooking. This is of :nterest to sev.
eral of Miss Lockman's male frien.*s.
for it is through cooking that most
g'rls win a husband. One of Miss
Lockman's suitors has already stated
that the girl he marries must
know how to cook. Perhaps this ac
counts for her endeavors to learn.
Occasionally, Miss Lockman becomes
worried and discouraged over her prog

to please "Bannie" she braces up and
works with "m'ght and main" to cook

Matteson Accepts
Position as Dancer
Former Vocal Instructor to Play
at Broadway Theater as
Female Tripper
Maurice Matteson, formerly vocal
instructor at the Univers'ty, has recent
ly accepted the position as a dancing
girl at the Broadway theater. Mr.
Matteson was selected from all of the
:ther contestants because of his cur
vis and his rhythm.
Another reason for his success as a
lancing girl, it is alleged, is Mr. Mat
teson's ease of expressing himself to
the melody of the music, and also be
:ause he is so light on his feet.
