BALL TEAM HAS MISFORTUNE ON NORTHERN TRIP SNOW AND SLEET WINNERS 'j Come Back Home Today to Buck Clemson Saturday-and Furman Monday The Birds have been keeping at it consistently while the majority of the students have been enjoying the week of Easter (lances. Putting on the final polishe the Gamecocks hopped the rat tIer to Parris Island, stronghold of Uncle Sam's marines, for a two game setto. The Leathernecks could not do much with the Bird pitchers for the Gamecocks took both games of the series by a 3 to 0 and 6 to 5 score. Hav ing seen enough of the soldiers life the Bird tossers returned to Columbia to meet the Calvinists from Clinton but Jupiter Pluvius intervened and no game resulted. Leaving Columbia .he Birds tock up their journey to Raleigh where they took the - North Caroina State team down by a 12 to I score. University of 1 Richmond and Virginia were saved by rain and snow respectively. However, the inaction of the two days told on the play of the Garnet and Black when they met the University of North Ca rolina for the Tar Heels kicked over the dope bucket by downing the Birds 3 to 2. The Gamecocks will return to Co lumbia and begin their campaign for the state title to-morrow when they meet Clemson on the University field. The Carolina players seem to have one of the best teams that has sported the Garnet and B1-ck in a number of years. They can hit any kind of pitching and they field in an excellent manner. The pitching staff is coming through in great style, although it was thought to be the weak spot of the Gamecock ma chine this year. The weather man is 'I order ng warm weather for a while now and this should aid the hurlers materially. -USC Co-Eds Forsake Indoor - Pastimes to Try Outdoor Games SOME SWEAR OFF SWEETS i t Athletics for Girls Include Track, Folk Dancing, Tennis and Baseball The spring outdoor season for girls has begun with more interest and a greater number participating than has I been interested yet. There is some sport to please anyone who has any athletic inclination whatever. For the more aesthetic andl graceful (of coturse all of them are) there is folk dancing. These classes were al most stormedl, there being such a de miand for dlanc ig lessons. An exhibi tion will probably be put on later in the spring in connection with the boys gymt teamn.( Trennis seems to be the most popular sport on the spring curricultum. As there can be only 16 in a class many sections had to be formed to meet the dlemand. Plans are being made for a tennis tournament. Only a few as pirants have as yet signed up. ra~ck and basketball certainly holds eqjual swvay along with all others. There1 is a new baseball field on Gibbes Green for the exclusive use of the girls and they can be seen there every after noon having strenuous wvorkouts. A manager has already been selected and I a class baseball tournament is p)lan Tfhe track team is also taking prac tices on the field every afternoon get ting in goodl shape to break some more i wvorld recordls. They are practicing several sprints, high andl broad jumps, 1 high and low hurdles and the javelin andl baseball throw. Training slips have been d'stributted andl the girls are ver~y coniscientiously abstaininig from all drug store temptations until after< Field Day. (late to be set later. 1 Thlere is no end of increased interest Ii in athlethics this year among the girls s INGLES 'HE GAMECOCKS had hard luck on the road. They started' off by lick ing the North Carolina State team and then were forced into inaction by the weather for two days without practice. The University of North Carolina put a win over by one run on the fourth day out. 'HE BIRDS SHOT at the pennant will be taken tomorrow when the Clemson Tigers pay a visit to Col umbia. The Tigers have a good team this year, boasting of a victory over Tech and several other good teams. URM.\AN WILL be played here Mon day. The victory of the basketball team over that of the Purple last winter was the first Carolina victory over Furman for two years. The ball team has no mind to allow the Hurricane to start its winnings at their expense. URalAN HAS a strong team, how ever. It will be something of a treat to watch Hipp,s, the Furman first sacker in action, as he will go to the Athletics in June. 'HE FRESHMEN play Clemsi to morrow and Furma:i today, both games away from home. They have a strong team this year and are expecting to put up a pair of great battles in the upper part of the state. HE 'l'ENNIS TEAM has been on the road for the past few (lays and have been meeting with success. They first journeyed to Davidson where the match was lost by a close score. However, Clemson and Furmai fell before the Carolina racqueteers. HE 'l'ENNIS players are expected to go iigh in the state tourney this year as judged by eariy performi ances. Wilson. Beattie, Coleman, Fair make a good combinati,in. nd great progress has been made in ist one year. If the Director of 'hysical Education for women con nues her untiring efforts, women ath tes at the University of South Caro na will soon be on the map along with he other great Universities. FROSH TA CKLE BAPTISTS AND CLEMSON CUBS TEAM SHOWS UP WELL Windus, Nolan, Cooper, White, and Gross Take Care of Infield Jobs Coach Stoney has rounded his fore most baseball candidates into what ap pears to be a formidable aggregation. ''hey have been indulging in several practice games and ieave today to play the Furman Freshmen in Greenville and the Clemson yearlings at Clemson to morrow. At first base is cavorting Mike \Vin dus, a southpaw. \Vindus is a steady player who knows his job well. He is sure of the infield throws and he can swat the old apple right on the nose. In the practice game with the Southern Shops \Vednesday, \Vindus drove one to right field for the circuit. At second is Nolan, basket ball star and former Parker lIi player. No;an is a graceful fielder and as full of pep as a cheerleader. He handles the key stone sack like a leaguer and he can be counted upon to hit in the pinches. The shortstop position is a fight be tween Cooper and White. Both men are good fielders, but \Vhite is a heavier hitter. The hot corner is well filled by young Gross. Gross is one of the neatest play ers on the freshman squad and he looks good in action. He has a ppwerful arm and he is sure of the line drives that come his way. He is good with the stick also. It will not be much trouble for filling Captain Jeffords' shoes on the varsity next year if Gross returns to school. The hurling staff is replete with much good material. Stoddard looks to !e about the best one of them. He is steady at all times and has the making of a good boxman. McKnight works well and lie can he used in a number of games. Rogers has a worid of steam and if he can control it will be valuable. Sanders is another man who shows signs of be coming a star. The outer gardens are well taken care of by McGill, Allen, Chandler, Camp bell, McElrath. They are good infielders and their playing will, in all probability, he decided upon by their hitting. -USC TRACKERS MEET DA VIDSON TEAM IN NORTH STATE "ROOSTER" WORKING HARD Is Graduate of Davidson And Is Doubly Anxious to Take Heavy En'd of Score The Blird trackmen are hriming their spurs for a sharp match with Davidson tomorrow in the Wildcat den. )uring the past few weeks the trackmen have met WVofford, P.C. andl North Carolina. The Terriers were no match for- the Birds as they were snowved uinder lby McIcFaddeIfs mleni. P.C. came ouit the winner over the Gamecocks aftei- trail ing for the greater part of the afternoon. The TCar Heels brought to Coltimbia one of the best track aggregations ever seen in action on Davis Field. They took inearly every event andl overwhelmedl the Gamecocks in a manner that left no argument. However the cinder path artists are dlue to make a god show in the WVild cat meet tomorrow. "Rooster" has been giving his men plenty' of wvork (luring the past wveek and lhe expects to have them in top form for the meet. It wvill he exceedingly interesting to watch the outcome of this meet as the C'arolina coach, McFadden, is a graduate of D)a vidlson andl it wvas there that lhe learnedl the greater part of his track knowledge. The following Saturday the Birdmeni will go to Greenville to meet their an cient rivals, Furman. and after that the state meet will he held in Clinton. -USC Bill Crollins. one of Carolina's pep l)iest cheerleaders, has been visiting in Columhia and( on the campus for th past week.
