FURMAN Furman Falls Prey to Birds In Final Gam. SCORE IS CLOSE - 27-.2 Jim Far-Rogers Leads in Scor ing-Smith Makes Pretty Shots In one of the fastest, most har fought, and thrilling games ever wit nessed in Columbia the Gamecock broke the Furman Jinx and downet the Purple Hurricane by a score o 24 to 27. The game was enough tc produce many cases of heart-failur< last Wednesday night. From begin ning to end it was a toss-up as to whc would win, with Furman leading th< greater part of the time. Up and dowi the floor the hard battling teams swep until it seemed as though the strait would prove to be more than the hu man frame could endure. But at the end the Gamecock waved his prou< head in victory and well has he cause to crow loud and lustily. It was th< first Carolina victory over Furman it a major sport in two years. The playing of young Mr. Jim Farr product of Columbia Hi was nothinj short of spectacular. And not far be hind him was another Columbia bo: by name of Fair. This pair, rushet into the game near its close, with Fur man leading by several points, fount the basket for victory. The greate part of the credit should go to Farr for he brought his team out of th rear by virtue of his deadly foul shoot ing and added a couple of basket from the floor also. Rogers and Seide man did yeoman duty for the Garne and Black until forced to retire on ac count of fouls. Swink, playing his las game in basketball uniform for th Garnet and Black did well. "Red" Smith good Captain "Red" Smith of Furmal kept the Carolina fans in a high stato of excitement by his wonderful shoot ing from a distance. It seemed a though he could not miss and ever time he got his hands on the leathe there was imminent danger of a bask et for the Purple and White. He als, played a fine floor game, being of muc help to his teammates in carrying th ball down the floor. Dorman, Furmar forward was not far behind his dough ty captain in the matter of shooting He sank many beauties from all an gles and proved to be an able runninl mate to Smith. Byrne also shone b coming up the floor by beautiful drib bling on several occassions to mak pretty shots. The game opened when Smith cage a pretty one for Furman. Carolin then got a basket and two foulsi short order. Furman came back to ti the score by another basket and tak the lead by a foul shot. From then o until the end of the first half it wva nip and tuck with Furman holding th lead by a few points. At the end c the first half the Purple Hurricane wa leading by a score of 14 to 10. Th second half got off to a slow start fc the first two or three minutes of pla: but Furman renewed the dance b sinking a basket. Carolina replic with another basket and from the until the last few minutes Furma maintainedl a lead of four of five point: Carolina seem to have trouble findi in the basket. With four mInutes t go and Furman leading by a couple c baskets, Rogers and Seideman wer1 out on personal fouls. Farri came ir and immediately made his presence fel by catching a couple of points on foul. Furman got another basket an Farr came back with a basket. Far again shot a fouls that put the score a a tie. Furman went into a one poin lead with a fou? shot but Carolin; came back and the score was 25 to 22 Fair, who had returned to the gain shot another basket for good measur< and the game found Furman on th< JINX FINA Seen Between Baskets THE BIRDS REVENGED themselves upon Clemson last Saturday night. They went right into Tigertown and brought out a 36 to 20 victory. EVERYBODY IS CLAIMING the state title, why not Carolina? No team in the state can point out a stronger record than the Game cocks have. Of course the Game cocks are modest enough but with everybody in the scramble we per ceive no reason why the Garnet and Black cannot be among those mentioned. IT IS A PITY that the Birds are not to be among those present at the S. I. C. tournament this year. It seems as though some misunder standing arose about the manner in which a team was invited to at tend the tourney between the Carolina mentors and the Tourney officials. THE GAMECOCKS STOOD a chance of winning high honors this year. While one could hardly predict that the Birds would win the title off-hand, it is certainly not too great a presumption to say that they would come out well. AND BY COMING OUT well we do , not mean being eliminated the first round or two. For it stands to reason that the Carolina quint stood a good chance of winning - high honors with such teams as Tech and Florida in the running. THE BIRDS BEAT Tech and Flori t da, Tech falling twice. Both of these teams chalked up victories against conference teams that Ca rolina did not play. Clemson also was beaten by the Garnet and Black. THE FURMAN JINX proved good r last Friday night in Greenville r when the Purple Hurricane downed the Gamecocks. Imagine one man scoring eleven points while neither the opposing team nor any of his teammates scored a single point I iBUT THE JINX was broken last Wednesday night when the Game 9 cocks took the Furmanites into t camp by a 27 to 23 score. It was thme first Carolina victory over Furman in a major sport in two years. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST games ever played on the gym fBoor. The e outcome wvas in doubt from begin e unng toedand there wsplenty " of action the whole night. s e JIM FARR BROKE into the lime Slight by comning into the game with s his team trailing the Purple and e .bringing them up to victory by his r perfect shooting. It was a won d (erful exhibition. SBiddies' Season Has Been Great Success - The Carolina Biddies wind up their a season by playing Clemson to-night f and the Citadel to-morrow night. The t Biddies have had an extremely good , season this far and if they take their t last two opponents into camp they a have every reason to lay claim to the j state title of South Carolina. Under r the tutelage of Burnett Stoney they have swept everything in the state be fore them with the exception of the Citadel "frosh" who threw a spoke into their machh, ery in the City by the Sea. This game is not counted in the run ning for the title, however, as the young canines have not played a regu- I tar schedule this year. LLY LOST Editor Names An All-State Team For '26 MANY GOOD PLAYERS Habel and Weeks Lose to Smith and Douglas-Rogers and Seideman Sure DOUGLAS . ... -F...... CITADEL SMITH ..-....F.----- FURMAN HOLCOMBE .... C.... CAROLINA ROGERS .......G..... CAROLINA SEIDEMAN .....G..... CAROLINA In picking the all state team of 1926, the editor is faced with an unusually hard proposition as nearly every team in the state this year had at least one or two individual stars. Of course this is only one man's opinion and although there are possibly many who do not agree with this selection they are asked to bear in mind the fact that nearly every sportswriter and fan sees a team from a different angle. In picking the forwards Douglas gets first call over the rest this year. The Citadel captain is fast, quick thinking and a sure shot. His floor game is above the average. Smith of Furman gets the other place although he is hard pushed by Weeks of the Citadel and Habel of Wofford. Smith has the advantage of being tall and he is one of the best forwards on long shots that the writer has seen this year. At the center position Holcombe has an edge over any center seen in action this year. He is tall and rangy, his height enabling him to get the jump on his opponents the greater part of the time. Holcombe's value to his team does not stop at this for he is one of the best shots in the state, being high scorer for his team in nearly every game this year. For the guard positions is found a wealth of material. One of them must surely go to Rogers for he is one of the best floor men seen in action this year and he adds to his value greatly by being a good shot. Rogers played at forward the greater part of the season but on this team with Douglas and Smith at forward, he is better placed at guard. Seidenian gets the other guard position. This player from Carolina has enjoyed a successful sea son and his play merits him a place on this team. He is fully capable of guarding his basket against all comers and his size is the main factor in catch ing the ball rebounding from the backboard. Figg of the Citadel had a good year but lhe is not as fast as Seideman. All in all this team looks to be as strong a one as could be found in the state this year. There are fotar men on it who are capable of putting the b)all through the hoop from a reason able distance and all five are exper ienced in the indoor game. It would be hard for the, opposing guards to keep Rogers, Holcombe, Douglas, and Smith from going down the floor to their basket and it would be equally as hard for any opposing team to carry the ball down through these five men Among the most prominent of these are Nolan, Windus, White Butler, Wolfe, Stoddard, Chandler, Barrineau. Vogel and others. Following is a record of the games played by the Biddies to dlate: Carolina.-36 .............28 Furman.
