BIRDS YA Citadel Loses To Gamecocks In Good Game REVENGES LATE DEFEAT Seideman and Wise Play Well Carolina Defense Proves Very Stiff The Gamecock was waiting with his spurs sharpened for the Citadel Bull Dog last night and once the conflict began the Bird immediately began to inflict mortal wounds in the Bull Dog's hide. In the Bird's breast rankled the memory of a defeat suffered at the hands of the same Bull Dog and re venge was sweet. The Bull Dogs were held at bay during the entire night by the brilliant work of the Garnet and Black defense and the Cadet's defence was unable to stop the dazzling attack of the Bird's forwards. Doped to lose by a large margin the Gamecocks rose to the heights of glory by coming out of a slump and playing the brand of basketball that is bound to win against anybody. "Si" Seide man, brawny guard, was the individual star of the fray. Time and time again he caught the ball on the rebound from the backboard after one of the desper ate long shots attempted by the Cita del forwards. He kept the ball away from his goal and did his share towards starting it back towards the Citadel basket. Buster Wise, given his first real chance this year, shone by drop ping in many baskets from the floor and added a nice sum by his foul shooting. Bill Rogers was the Bill of old, tricky with the ball and sure of his shots. Holcombe also played a peach of a game until forced out on fouls. Weeks and Douglas were all that advance dope predicted them to be but no forward could get by the bril liant defense put up by the Gamecocks last night. The worked together in perfect unison and startled the fans from time to time by their spectacular shots from a long distance. Weinburg and Reeder also played well for the Citadel. Reeder's floor work being especially good. It was just a matter of too much defense for the Citadel to display any real ability at ringing up baskets. The Carolina quint devoted the greater part of its time to watching the Citadel forwards and slipping down the floor whenever the opportunity afforded itself to ring up a basket. The game opened up when Weeks caged a beauty from mid-floor and was followed by a foul shot by Douglas. Rogers got a pretty one and then the Citadel quint added one miore by the foul route. A pretty shot from mid floor made the count four all. From then on the Gamecocks drew ahead until at the end of the first half they held a six point lead, the score being 12 to 6. The Citadel returned to the game in the second half wvith a vim and soon had cut down the Gamecock's lead to one point but Holcomb)e jumped into the limelight by rushing up sev eral and with this the Carolina dlefense tightened down hard. When the pis tol shot ended the game the Garnet and Black had a total of 28 points against 20 for the Citadel. The Birds seemed to have recovered from the slump suffered in the Clem son game 19. night. They had team work down to the last letter. Tonight the Florida Alligators will be engaged in batjtle. It is not known what strengh they possess but the team from the Land of Flowers usually manages to give its opponents a great battle. It was sweet revenge for the cc defeat of the Birds in Charleston T1 by the Bull Dogs. g A PERFECT DEFENSE and a daz- ha zling attack was too much for the *a Citadel quint to withstand. The le Birds worked in perfect coordinat- ar ion the whole game and over- m whelmed the Bull Dogs. ie; se THE CITADEL gathered only six points in the first half, which am- th ply demonstrates the superiority ha of the Birds. The far famed be Weeks and Douglas were unable in to penetrate the Gamecock de- fir fense sufficiently to become dan- to gerous at any time during the gu night. of W( ;EIDEMAN WAS THE outstanding ca star in the Gamecock firmanent last night. The big fellow defended his basket successfully the whole sa night and he carried the ball down of the floor in great style whenever v the opportunity afforded itself. th F ELORIDA COMES to play the Game cocks tonight. The Alligators are C: reputed to have a strong team this Ie year. They lost to Mercer by a B small margin and also met defeat C at the hands of Georgia. T w WHICH DOES NOT detract from G their prestige at all as both of the In above named teams are top-notch ers in the art of leather tossing. Georgia also downed the Game- dr cock quint so the teams should be s fairly evenly matched. w 3EORGIA TE' H plays a return en- -fc gagement in Columbia tomorrow w night. For one would deny that the g9ine'gdt E to a bad start for the Jungaleers, it the ending was a horse of another for, as the Gamecocks soon realized. te Birds took the lead early in the me and seemed to have the game 11 in hand at the end of the first if but Clemson injected new life into game that was rapidly becoming list ;s by overcoming a ten point lead d winning the game in the last few nutes of play by some of the flash ,t shooting in the hoop that has been en here this year. The Gamecocks seemed to grow just e least bit overconfident after they d anabsed a respectable lead and fore they woke up the Tigers were the lead. The Tigers, who in the st half seemed totally blind, began find the basket with a sickening re larity and in the last few minutes play it was the Gamecocks who re trailing and who were unable to ge the wicker. The game began when Bill Rogers nk a beautiful shot from the side the court and Holcombe followed th a foul. Newman got one and en Brock tied it up with a foul point. )r the first few minutes the teams ,ttled on even terms and then the trolina quint began to draw into the ad. When the first half ended the irds were holding a ten point lead. )ming back in the second half the gers opened up an offensive that as dormant in the first half. The amecocks just couldn't get to-gether. a short while the ten point lead was most gone and with the score stand g at 28-27 Fskew, Clemson forward, ibbled down the floor and sank a owbird to give the Tigers the lead, hich they never relinquished. Bill Rogers played a beautiful game r the Birds in the first half but he as guarded' closely in the second and d not get away but seldom. Rogers ged all of his points in the first half om a good distance but stopped in e second half and tried to pass down rough the Clemson defense which as too tight to allow it. Seideman so played a nice game at guard, he ~ing a tower of strenght around his Lsket. Buster Holconmbe again led the'scoring from the floor and play a fair game besides. For the Tigers, Roy was the bright ar at center. He got the tip-off the cater part of the time and had a adly eye for the basket. Newman id Palmer also performed well.
