Bird's Cagers Play Georgia Quint Tonight PLAY GA. TECH SATURDAY Gamecocks Hope to Defeat Two Cracker State Teams on Second Road Trip The Gamecocks make another invasion of foreign territory tonight. The Crack er state will play hosts to the Carolina men to-night and to-morrow night. To night the far famous Bull Dogs from the University of Georgia will be met and tomorrow night the Yellow Jackets of Tech will endeavor to sting their way to victory. The Birds are all the more determined to make a good showing on this trip to make up for the defeat they suffered last week in Charleston. The men left this morning in the best of spirits, confident that they could overcome the Cracker state teams. The Georgia Bull Dogs have had a successful season so far, having just returned from a trip through North Car olina and Virginia. They dropped only one game the whole trip, that to the University of Maryland. A great deal of material was left from last year's team to the Georgia coach this year and that gentleman also inherited a wealth of excellent material from the "frosh" squad of last year. No direct dope can be gotten on the Bull Dogs as they have not hopped on any South Carolina team as yet, but from the scores they have been running up on their onponents from their own state and other surrounding territories they are a fast bunch of leath er tossers. The Tech Yellow Jackets are prepar ing for the invasion of the Gamecocks and are expecting to repulse them suc cessfully, according to the dope that has leaked out from the Tech strongholds in Atlanta. Tech supporters claim that the Yellow Jackets have one of the best quin to ever strut the Gold and White this year and are expecting to make a strong bid for the tournament championship to be held under the S. I. C. They figure down that way that this is the best chance they have to size up the weak nesses of the most likeiy contenders for the title before the tournament is held and also a good chance to gain a little prestige at the same time. In Hearn at center, the Jackets have a tosser that rates with the best of them. Hearn is a giant among large men and he is a deadly shot under the basket. He manages to get the tip-off on the best of centers so the Tech offense centers around him. The Tech forwards, Wikle and Moreland, are regular "Dead-Eye Dicks." when it comes to ringing up bas kets, also. Tech's proud boast is that it takes two men to watch the mighty Hearn. They figure that while the op posing teams defense is watching Hearn, Wilde and Moreland will pile up the score. George is said to be an impassa ble man at guard and Cobb can toss in a few points for the Jackets also. With all of this facing them the Gamecocks are calmly preparing to throw a monkey wrench in the machinery for the two Cracker teams, if it is possible to be done. They realize that they are up against a hard proposition and figure that they will have a terrific fight on their hands. but they intend to let the Georgia players knowv they have been in a battle even if they should wvin. - U.s.c. - BIDDIES PLAY PARKER QUINTET HERE TONIGHT Carolina Freshmnen Well Primed for Visiting Five-Keels at Center Carolina Biddies get into action on their own court tonight when they play the hardworking team of Parker High upstate champions in basketball of the South Carolina high school league a year ago and likely candidates for the same honor this season. The game is to begin at Universiy court at 8 o'clock. The Biddies had their final workout last night and were apparently in good trim for their first matched game of the season. While Coach Stoney shifted Keels to guard for a trial last night and put Wolf at center, Keels will probably start in the jumping position. From Nolan, Win'dus and Barrineau Coach Stoney will select his forwards, while Vogel and Chandler are to start at gmards. Seen Between Baskets (By "Gee King) THE BIRDS BROKE EVEN on their trip, to the City by the Sea. They took the College of Charleston Ma roons into camp by an overwhelming score but met defeat at the hands of the Citadel cadets. The soldiers evidently learned accuracy on the rifle range for they just couldn't seem to miss the basket last Saturday night. We move that they be elimi pated from the State Title race until .the other state schools have had a chance to shoot at a few tar gets. BILL ROGERS WAS not dismayed by anything in that Citadel game, tho. He mixed in with the cadets and made them do a little fast thinking to get around him. He looked just as good as Weeks or Douglas in every department of the indoor game. Therefore, we hereby nomi nate him to be considered when the penslingers begin to pick these my thical all-state quints. THE COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON thought a sea spout had come out of the famous Charleston harbor when they ran against the speedy Birds. However it wasn't fair for the Stan dard Oil Company to let loose some of its weli-knowrq gas Saturday to aid The Citadel. We don't see what John D. had to put his finger in a South Carolina basketball game for Perhaps that it psys to advertise. THE GAMECOCKS HOP THE rattler for the Cracker state, known as the hottest state in the Union and as having the worst roads in the world, but from all accounts these handicaps don't prevent the schools of that state from having good basketball teams. THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA furnishes the opposition for the Birds tonight. The Bull Dogs have bowled over their opponents right and left and expect to have certain rooster's meat served up to them tonight for a delectable feast. But, then, a rooster's meat is always mighty tough to chew in South Car olina, so it wouldn't surprise ye scribe to hear that a certain Bull Dog has indigestion tomorrow morn ing, even if he does live in Georgia. THE YELLOW JACKETS of Tech entertain the Birds tomorrow night. The Golden Tornado has already bumped off the ieather tossers from Tulane, Georgia, Havana, and Mar quette, besides several others this year. TIhe Bird basketeers are going down there looking for trouble, tho, so they wvon't be surprised if they find it written in large letters. WE HEAR TIHAT TECH is casting its lamps on the pinnacle of the Southern Conference this year. The Trornlado has one of the best teams in its history and is going to let loose a terrible amount of blowing from the Cave of the Winds against opposing quints to breeze to victory over them. Last year Tech didn't fare so well in the indoor game but the Jackets are coming back this year wvith a vim sp)elt in capital let ters. EXAMINATIONS BREAK INTO the limelight as the most likely contend er for the championship next week. We doff our hats to that awe-inspir ing body, the faculty,,and let them rtle in an absolute manner. Even the most sturdy athlete on the campus is liable to take the count when he puts on the gloves with the aforesaid gentlemen. HERE IS HOPING that everything will be normal by the time ye scribe takees his trusty pen in hand again to shoot hot air. SWINK STARS Gamecock. Defeat College of Charleston-Lose to Citadel -Rogers Plays Brilliant Game The Birds broke even on their trip to Charleston last week-end. On the first night the Gamecocks took the Col lege of Charleston to ride but fell be fore the onslaught of the Cadets from the Citadel the second. In the first game the Birds showed the results of hard practice for they had the good teamwork down to a perfection and were playing rings ar:und the Maroons. At the end of the first half the college players helk; the fast Birds to a 16 to 13 score. Mauro, at guard, for the Maroons was putting up a wonderful defense and the Bird players had a hard job getting ;y him to take shots at the basket. Supe rior work on the part of the Birds was in evidence more so than ever though in the second half and when the game ended the score was standing 40 to 27 for the Garnet and Black. Captain M. Swink, leading the Gamecocks for the first time was the outstanding star of the game. He amassed a total of fifteen points during the night and played a wonderful floor game. Bill Rogers, one of the flashiest men to ever don a Gamecock uniform was in top form and he played rings around the Maroon's defense. For the College of Charleston Charlie Mauro was the bright light. His defensive work was of the highest order and he was the source of unending trou bi'e to the Gamecock forwards. The next night proved to be the Wat erloo of the Gamecocks, however. The speedy Citadel cadets flashed their way to a spectacular victory over the Birds. Although the Birds fought hard and never gave up, the speed and experiene of the Blue and White players proved to be too much for them to withstand. The Citadel lost only one man from last year's championship team and they had - lost none of the speed which character ized their play of last year. The Birds jumped into the lead at the first when Seideman was fouled and made the point. Rogers followed with a pretty basket to make the count of three. Sanders sank a snowbird for the cadets and Douglas made good a foul shot. Reeder rang up a basket to give the cadets a lead which the Gamecocks were never able to recover. The first half ended with the Citadel basketeers lead ing 23 to 10. The Gamecocks were una ble to improve their relative positions but very little for the end of the game found the Birds on the short end of a 42 to 24 score. Out of the defeat stood a shining light for Carolina, however, in the person of Bill Rogers. Rogers' game wvas equal to that of any man on the floor Saturday night and a great deal better than most of them. He dribbled past The Citadel defense many times to ring up beautiful baskets and his floor wvork w'a the best shgwn during the game. Buster Holcombe, per forming before his home town fans, played a good game and shot several pretty baskets during the night. Cap taini Swink also showed up well. --U.s.c. TOURNAMENT PLANS BEING PUSHED AHEAD Decide Basketball Contest By Same Process as Intra,. Mural Football Plans for intra-mural basketball are being pushed forward rapidly in the office of the Director of Physical Edu-1 cation. Bids are now being received' by Mr. Van Meter on equipment to be bought for the 75 to 100 teams that are expected to register. This sport is most admirably adapted to intra-mural use, as the cost of equip ment is much less than that for football or other forms of sport, and the danger of injuries by the students is also les sened by the type of play. Quite a number of teams are already in formation, and a number of individu als have been over practicing at goal shooting. It is expected that this num ber will increase daily, but regular prac tice will not be started until the second term. Collegiate!
