Y. M. C. A. AC] DR. MITCHELL IS SCHEDULED FOR SUNDA Y Y MEET SPEAK IN CHAPEL MONDAY Former President Popular Speak er in South Carolina -Often Heard Dr. S. C. Mitchel, former president of the University will speak in the Chapel Sunday night, and at chapel services Monday morning. Dr. Mitchel had to cancel his engagement last Sunday, but will be in Columbia this week end. Dr. Mitchel is one of the best speakers heard in the state. While he was presi dent of the University he filled numerous engagements from all over South Caro lina to speak. The subject of his talk Sunday night at the Y.M.C.A. meeting will be "Your Job." Monday he will speak on the World Court. Train schedules prevented Dr. Mitchel from speaking last Sunday night as an nounced in the Gamecock. .He had made a previous engagement and accept ed the Y's invitation expecting to be able to attend both engagements. A change in the Seaboard schedule made this arrangement impossible, and Dr. Morse, head of the department of philos ophy and psychology was invited to ad dress the meeting. An account of Dr. Morse's talk is found in another column of this issue. - u.s.c. -- BLUE RIDGE OFFERS Y.M.C.A. SCHOLARSHIPS Student Presidents Offered Six Weeks Course-University "Y" Writes for More Information Scholarships to the six-week session of the summer school at Blue Ridge will be given to presidents of the 'Y' organi zations on the Southern campuses, is the notice received by the University 'Y' in a letter from Dr. Weatherford. The plan of the scholarship offer is intended pri marily for those schools who do not have 'Y' secretaries, but if there is any surplus of funds it will probably, be offered to school having a secretary. Election of the next president of the University 'Y' will be held in March. The secretary is writing for further in formation on the scholarship off. All possible steps will be taken to send the president to Blue Ridge next summer. Several schools, including Georgia Tech and the University of North Carolina were represented by Y.M.C.A. presidents enrolled ii the regular course at the 'Y' college. ,The courscs offered during the summer of .1927 will include: Christian Funda mentals; Methods and Programs for Bible Study; Content and Method of a Y.M.C.A. Program; and, Y.M.C.A. History - U.s.c. -- "PRAYER" SUBJECT OF -DR. TAYLOR'S TALK E'fficacy of prayer was discussed at chapel exercises Tuesday morning by Dr. Howard Taylor, medical maiss:ona~ry from China. Dr. Taylor chose as his subject "Does God hear and apswer prayers ?" In his talk Or. 'Taylor cited numer Otis incidents of his experience to show that Godl does hear and answer man's~ prayer. He p)ointedl out that ftunds had come unsolicited to maintain the Inland Mission in China. This mission was founded by the late Hudson Tay lor, father of Dr. Taylor. The speaker pointed out that on an average of two) thousand dollars is received daily for the support of the mission that has never had to ask for contribtutions of money or services. - U.S.C. -- BLUE RIDGE MANAGER TO SPEAK TO COUNCIL j. J. King, business manager of Blue Ridge and professor in Southern Y College will be in Columbia this com ing Monday. Mr. King will nl%ke a short talk at the council meeting Moni day night in the interest of Blue Ridge and of the Southern College. All the members of the Y board and the fresh men council will be invited to the meet 'IVITIES OF - i THURSDAY TEAS WILL COMMENCE NEXT WEEK Five o'clock teas will be resumed at Flinn Hall Thursday afternoon. John Pate, chairman of the 'Y' social com mittee has completed plans for the teas. Mrs. C. Croft Williams will head a faculty committee to complete arrange ments for the first tea. No programs interfere with the social hour of these affairs, and students are invited to drog i1h for refreshments. This is the third year that the 'Y' has served tea. The hearty student response indicates the suc cess of the teas. - u.s.c. BIBLE CLASSES DRAW CLOSER TOWARDS END TENEMENT 17 HOLDS LEAD Followed Closely by Tenements 24 and 14-352 Attended Last Meeting Bible Study groups this week report a good series of meetings. With twen ty-one tenements reporting the attend ance reached a mark of 352. There were several changes in the standings during the past week. Ten ement 24 drew up to w:thin two lone points of the pace-setting Tenement 17-2. Tenement 14 also made a big in crease moving from eight to fifth place. In the matter of class attendance Hamp Graham's class again won the banner with a mark of 35. This class has been coming strong and are sure to finish near the top. There are only two more meetings before the holidays begin. The class that wins the race will have to step a fast pace for the rest of the time. The subject for the next meeting will be a continuation of the topic on "Business Relationships." Trhe most definite infor mnation that has been secured yet is that it is something absolutely new. It has been described as a four ring cir cus and even an eight ring circus all in one. The party will be under the direction of Bill Pool's Play leadership class. The refreshments will be furnished by the Y.M.C.A. The co-eds and the Chii cora girls have been invited. Carte dus Jouar AND it's practical as well as keen looking; the black tipped lacquer-red barrel will be found no matter where you Parke 'er. _ BUSY WEEK FIND JOBS FOR 150 STUDENTS THRU "Y" HELP AVERAGE $40 PER MONTH Employmnent Committee Meets to Seek Jobs to Keep Other Men in School The employment committee of the ' met with a committee of business men in Columbia at the Marmac Hotel at 2:30 Thursday in order to see if jobs could not be found for students at the Univer sity. To date some 150 University students are working in the city. The average wage earned by the men has been around $40.00 per month. Some of the men are only earning $12.00 but a few men are making as high as $75.00 per month. However, there are a number of men who have not found employment and the committee is making every effort possi ble to place these men before Chri-stmas so that they may be able to return to school for the rest of the year. The plan to be followed by the com mittee will iikely be to divide the men now looking for jobs among the com mittee each man being responsible for a small number of men. William Lykes, past president of the Focus Club and now secretary of the chamber of commerce, is heading up the committee from town. The other men at the luncheon were Wm. Cappleman, Dave Robinson, Ed. Hodges, W. S. Nel son, Ben Sawyer, Moffat DuPre, Coach Stoney, Sam Burke, and R. G. Bell.
