By Coaches B Varsity Will Probably Be Reduc ed Monday to Half of Its Number RATS DOWN TO THIRTY Many Candidates Out For Both Teams - 70 Freshmen Names Published Some keen competition was evident on Davis Field last week among the men out for the Gamecock 1925 base ball team, for Coach Branch Bocock, free from his duties as basketball men tor, was on hand to look over his prospects. He was out every after noon this week watching closely with a pleased gleam in his eye the move ments of the swarm of material flit ting about in the field or cracking out hard drives from the plate. The week's practice began in a busi ness-like manner. The men began a stiff program of training which will be continued until they are in good condition. The first game is about three weeks off and by that time the coaching staff hopes to have their fly-swatters going good. TENNIS SQUAD IS REDUCED The following men are the first eight in the tennis elimination matches and will probably be the ones who sur vive the cut in the number of the squad Saturday: P. A. Wilson, Tally Elliott, Raymond Gaston, Billy Cole -man, Fishburne. Rease Joye. iPOR OF ALL SORT Fred Minshall, Editor 5uffer Cuts ocock and Stoney D EAOND USTING_ COACHES BOCOCK AND STONEY this week took their pruning shears in hand and commenced their du ties of trimming down the large squad of baseball candidates. The varsity took a large cut first and Stoney released all save 30 from his host of "rats." ALTHOUGH FRESHMEN are usual ly fond of cuts and indulge in them frequently this seems the most un kind of all for it only means that they must start back to taking gym. SPEAKING OF STONEY'S BOYS, their ranks contain some classy and interesting ball players. Watch out for some dope about them next week. Ir IS the track team's intention to let the student body know that they will be represented by a cracker jack bunch of cinder-path artists and to do this they want you to come tomorrow and watch their first time tryout. COACH BOCOCK is well pleased with the results obtained from spring football training. Not as much was done as had been expected but he has a "line on" many of the players and something definite to work on for next season. CAROLINA will be visited this week by four of the best high school basketball teams in the state from Parker, Charleston, Florence and Simpsonville high schools. Some of the players are future Carolina men and women and the school deems it a privilege to have them play on her court. THE FIRST LAP of the tennis eli mhination series will end Saturday when all men out, but eight, will be dropped from the comnpetition. These men, will play for a few more weeks and then the team will be made from the first four menct. On ly two will play at the state meet. IPLANS are rapidly being laid for put ting out a co-ed track team. It is just one more event in the in creasing field of co-ed athletics. The girls have a wealth of mater ial and should be especially good in the weights. ILET MR. BELT. look to his laurels. Mr. Van Metre announces that he will hold a men's handball tourney in May, in both singles and dou bles. Long piay ping-pong and handball prosper; hand in hand. CAROLINA'S baseball team will not suffer this season from any lack of material from aH indications that can be gathered at this time. Last year it was necessary to make a few changes in the lineup and let certain men play positions to which they were unaccustomed on account of the scarcity of candidates. But this time with small armies out for the different places the competition will be keener. The poys will have to fight for places and then perhaps fight in hold them. TS. CO-ED TRACK TEAM PLANS GOOD YEAR Many Girls Out For Their First Tryout On Last Thursday LUCILE GODBOLD IS COACH Several Meets Expected - Miss Irene Richardson Reports Thursday afternoon about fifty co eds met at the gymnasium for the first practice of the Pullets track team. The plans for the season are at present all tentative and the only thing that seems definitely ddecided is that there will be a team. At present track practice takes the place of co ed gym work and all women students who are not out for swimming have to report to the track coach. At present, the girls will have tol be restricted to two practices a week on account of crowded conditions but as their new field is being fixed in front of the infirmary they can soon have everyday training. No meets have been scheduled so far but several are in view, Mr. Van Metre, physical director, hopes to hold a state meet here and invite as many teams from girl's schools as can come. It is also hoped that a city meet can be arranged again this year. It was not held last year but Carolina entered in 1923. Even if these are not forth coming Miss Godbold, coach, says that the team .will enter the telegraphic meets held over the country every year. the members of the teams compete among themselves at home, she says, and wire the time or score in where the records are announced. This omnes between the fifteenth of April nd the fifteenth of May. "Little is known of the material at this time," said Miss Godbold, her ;elf a well known athlete and holder >f several Olympic records, "but I >elieve that most of it will come from he freshman class. The co-eds have iever been able to do much in this vork but the prospects are brighter his year." One of the members of the squad 'rom whom much is expected is Miss [rene Richardson of Winnboro, who iolds national high school records in iurdles and sprints. M-iss Richardson ays that every year she betters all der previous marks and so she is ex )ectedl to have an excellent season this year. - u.s.c. - TRACK MEN IN MEETS FOR TIME TRY OUTS Candidates To Race Here Other Times This Year Steve Prevost, manager of the track team, announces that tomorrow after noon both the freshman and varsity track men will participate in races so that the coach can time them and ob tain some idea as to their capabilities. Every one in the student b)ody who is interested in the Garnet and Black track prospects may come out to Davis Field and watch the proceedings. On the following Saturday, a novice meet will be held. All men will be allowed to participate and ribbons will be awarded to the men who get the first three places in each event.
