GAMECOCKS ,WIN THREE STRAIGHT GAMES College of Charleston, Newberry and Erskine Fall Before Carolina Boys The Carolina Gamecocks seemed to have taken a new lease on life since their return to the home barn yard from the long foreign invasion as they played a Jam-up, champion ship style of baseball to defeat three State opponents, College of Charles ton, Newberry and Erskine in three pretty exhibitions of the summer sport. Downs C. of C. The game with the Maroons o Charleston was -the first on the -list. Carolina took the jump in the first inning by giving pitcher Parler a three-run lead. Jaydee performed right well, too, allowing the visitors only 5 hits, keeping them well scat tered until the seventh, when errors allowed the Charlestonians to score. Bill Holland included a long triple in his three out of four hits. Petit of Charleston got a freak home-run. He also got three out o four. Parler caused nine to miss a third strike. Score by innings: R. H. E. Charleston .....000 000 220-4 5 3 Carolina .......300 110 10*-6 8 5 Batteries-Charleston: Nantz and Taylor. Carolina: Parler and Wheeler. Umpire, iBull (Carolina League). Win From Newberry The snappy team from Newberry came on May first, but went back with the short end of a 3 to I score. Smith of Carolina pitched a good game and his support was marred with only one error, Swink failing to cover first on a bunt. Wollett of the visitors got two triples, the only long hits Smith yielded. Beck was hurt by loose support. The game was a thriller, Carolina scored first, but Newberry constantly threat ened with a man on third or second. Bill Holland and Swink contributed some good stick work. Swink pfayed a wonderful game at second, barring his one error of commission, lie made 10 assists. R. H. E. Newberry ......000 000 010-1 7 3 Carolina ........100 000 20*-3 8 1 Batteries: Beck and Hedgepath; Smith and Wheeler. Umpire, Bull (Carolina League). Erskine Conquered Erskine was the next victim of the Birds' onslaught, victim is right, for Carolina played a wonderful game, supporting Parler with errorless ball behind some good box wor(, they also hit heavily. The infield of Holland, Smith, Rhame and Jeffords looked like the best of the year. They pulled two double plays. Lil lard playedi a good game at right field. He counted three runs, getting a single and triple arnd a fielder's choice to get on base. Jeffords and Smith hit two baggers. Each pitcher fanned seven. R. H. E. Erskine.........000 010 000--1 8 3 Carolina ........022 100 10*--6 11 0 Batteries: Wolfe and IBaker; Par ler andI Wheeler. Umpire, Bull (Carolina League). Biddies Lose The IBiddies lost their first inter-, collegiate game of the season to the Furman Yearlings on Tuesday afternoon in what was rather a track meet or a juggling party rather than a baseball game. Score 14 to 9. Each team used three pitchers. Caro lina issued 10 free passes to first; Furman, 4. The errors, were promiscuous in the score andl then many mistakes in judgment were nmade that cannot be shown in the summary. Carolina took a four-run lead by the third, but it was caught in the fourth and passedl with a mAr gin of seven in the next. Not until thle fourth did either team make a hit. The loss of the game for Caro lina was due to the pitcher's wild ness. Five of the purples' runs were forced in. R. H. E. Caro. Unm HENRY TO EDIT ANNUAL NEXT YEAR Much Interest Manifested in this Contest-Attempts to Hold up Election Fail The Nominating Committee got busy last Saturday and made their nomina tions for the annual election of the staff of the Garhet and Black. The ballots were given to the students Monday morning, at chapel, only after a certain number of students tried in vain to have the election held up and the constitution of the Garnet and Black waived. The exact motive for such action on their part is not clear. Tho beaten at this time they propose to bring about some changes in the present constitution that may prove helpful in the years to come. This contest was under the supervis im of the present staff members. The ballot box remained open at the chapel all (lay Monday. Nearly three hun dred and fifty members of the student body participated in this election. The results are as follows: EDITOR-IN-CHIEF (Scratch one) J. A. Henry (elected) J. H.
