OCT011'R 19, 1923 N<. 5 YOUNG GAMECOCKS LOSE TO NEWBERRY INDIANS PLENTY OF STARS Biddies Make Twenty-five First Downs and Comple%e Fifteen Passes. Indians --Four First Down and No Passes. The Newberry Indians left their tents among the hills for the annual pilgrimage to Davis Field to engage the young at'm-cocks. They turned the engagement i.nto a victory by taking advantage of the breaks of the game.. They fought hard but could not gain against the Biddie stonewall. Their four attempts at for ward passes were in vain, and runs were futile. With all these adverses they won by the score of 13-6. Carolina seems to be sutifering with a malady of misplays, fumbles, blocked passes and punts. Re member the dash that Norton, of Presby terian College made when he pulled a fumble out of the air and made the win ning touchdown. In a respect such was the case Saturday. Breaks and more breakS that went against the Biddies. The game opened very favorably for the "chickens" when they recovered the kick-off, and made two first downs but after three attempts for another first down were in vain, Johnson tried a placement kick that went Imw and was caught by an ndian. Rhial was forced to kick. Rogers called for a fair-catch, but was hit by a wearer of the grey jer sey. This drew a penalty against New berry. After an attempt thru the line Johnson tried a pass, but was a bit too slow in getttng it off. Williams, wear ing a red jersey an takon for a Biddie, siezed the ball and raced sixty-five yards for the first touchdown. Rhial failed to kick goal. Newherry received but failed to gain to any advantage and Rhial was forced to kick. During the 1rst half tle hall was kept inl the visit or's territory all of the time. It was a see-saw affair with Carolina gaining consistontly, making several first dmiins in succession, and completing several passes.. With (11n3ly a few miiites ti play be fmre tIhe Illt ali wa, n .
