Wofford Noses Out Gamecocks ir Tennis Meet Wofford College has the honor of be ing the first college to win a dual inter collegiate tennis tournament staged by two colleges of South Carolina. The Terriers came, saw and also conquered, but don't let anyone tell you that they didn't have the time of their young lives nosing out Floyd, Sparkman and Com pany by the barest of winable margins. Some of the fastest tennis ever witness ed in Columbia was pulled off on the University courts that day, particularly in the singles played in the afternoon. However, the old Gamecock will have another chance to peck the eyes out of the Terrier when these same two teams meet in Spartanburg on the 28th; the boys all say that they will bring home the bacon this time, as the last score was too close for comfort. But back to the matches last Saturday. Some brilliant tennis was played by both teams, but, however, and not taking credit from whom credit is due, the Carolinians did seem to be somewhat off their feed, not putting up as speedy a game as usual. Perhaps the damp, depressing atmosphere had something to do with it. Neverthe less, the Spartans outplayed the Birds badly in hte morning sets of two double matches, the Terriers winning in three straight sets in each instance, the Birds being able to annex only one game. In the afternoon the home guard seemed about to stage a sensational comeback when Sparkman, by some pretty serving and placing combined with clever head work, won the first single match from H. S. Floyd in two straight sets hand running, scores in each instance being 6-4. - In the next match, though, Childs ruined the hopes of the Carolinians when he annexed the second afternoon battle from Cothran, 6-1, 6-4, giving Wofford the necessary three, matches for the tournament. The closest match of the (lay was staged in the last duel between Green and Lesene, two sets going overtime. The Spratan finally won after a hard strug gle, 7-9. 7-5 and 6-3. Sparkman and Green were the stars for Carolina, but Clark Floyd and Sin gleton contributed some clever work as their p)art of the day's meet. Lesene and Childs were the outstand ing satellites of the visitors. The scores by matches: lFi'rst doubles (won by Wofford) : W. C. Childs and M. Lesene (Wofford) vs. W. C. Floyd andl S. TF. Sparkman (Caro lina), sets, 6-3, 6-3 and 6-0. Second doubles (won by Wofford): IH. S. Floyd and R. M. Danzler (Wof ford) vs. D. Bryson and R. Singletom (Carolina) ; sets, 6-3, 6-0, 4-6 and 6-2 First singles (won by Carolina): S. TI Sparkman (Carolina) vs. H. S. Floyd (Wofford); sets, 6-4 and 6-4. Second singles (won by Wofford): W C.
