GYMNASIUM PLANS WORK FOR YEAR (Continued from page 1.) ooxing squad have returned to the University. This is a source ot great encouragement, because last year's team was unquestionabIly the best boxing team ever turned out at the ITniversityN. In Thollilp Son, Jennings, Wood and Wiheeler the University will have a group of representatives who can give a good account of themselves in the squared ring. In addition to thse men-there are a score of others who are promising material. "Red" Thompson will assist with the boxing squad. and within the next six weeks will begin to g4t the new material into shape. 4 WRESTLING The interest in wrestling has greatly increased, men who were out for wrestling having done hard and colsistent work thru out the sunnier. Here agailn the University is fortunate for every member of last year's wrestling team is back and the new material is plentiful and very promising. John Jennings, the winner of last year's imedal for the best wrestler at the Universi ty, will assist with the wrestling squad together with the coopera tion of the other members of the team and the added assistance of an experienced wrestler who Mr. Van Meter is now negotiating with for special work in Decem ber, January, and February. The University will unquestionably have to be reckoned with by other colleges who intend to go out for the State championship. TENNIS The University tennis team has for the past two years won second place in the State challpionshiip series and it is the earnest desire of the Director of Physical Edu cation that this year's tennis team will win the championship. With in a few weeks a tennis club will be formed andl hard practice will be in progress. Tllere are at pres ent five courts on the campus that are in constant use an( a sixth one will be comPleted very shortly. There is probably as much interest in tennis as in any other minor sport and a number of high school men of promise have entered the University this fall and1( a large tennis squa~d will probably be at work before the end of the football season. SWIMMING TEAM Trhe University of South Caro Jina has never put out a swvim ming team before but Alex Waite and "Larry" McLean and several other swimming fans are going to form the nucleus of a good swim ming squad. Arrangements are being made for this team to work ouu, in the city Y. M. C. A. pool. If there are any other men in the University who think they can make the swimming team they are urged to report to either Mc Lean or Waite at an early (late. CROSS--COUNTRY TEAM The interest in cross-country running has never been very great at the University, but this year either in high school or prep school have (lone long distance running. Within the next two weeks a cross-country team will be asked to report for practice. The Aniual Cross-Country Run that is held every year at either New berry or Clinton with connection to the Newberrv-Presbvterian Col lege Thanksgiving (ame is the first contest that the cross-coun try team will have ani opportunity to take part in. It should be re membered by everyone that the men who make any of these teams and aire fortunate enough to be winners inl the State contest will not only receive their letters as members of a relresentative IIni versity team but in addition the Department of Education is plan ning to give a sweater to each suc cessful contestant.
