Goodwin ; nega tive Schumnert Ga..m STATE INTERCOLLEGIATE TRACK MEET SUCCESS (Continued from page 1.) , "guts," to use that incomparable - campus word so appropriate on - this occasion. Hampered by lack of proper coaching, since Coach Crawford's illness, and handicap ped by the small number out for track. due to the almost total absence of interest in this form of sport on the campus, our rep resentatives in the meet made a record that Carolina men may truly boast of. Winning 5 first, 3 seconds. 5 thirds and 2 fourths, for a total of 45 1-2 points, they took second place in the meet, and won the praise of everyone present. Track heretofore has occupied small space in College life at Carolina, the teams that have represented the University in the past having been composed wholly of those men wvho wvent onj from the pure love of the sport. and not because of any em phasis or concerted effort on the part of the student body as a whole. However, we are confi fidently looking forward to the time in the near future when track will be considered a major sport alongside football, basket ball and baseball; and we express the hope that Carolinas campus may annua-lly he the Mecca of the track men of the State, and that Saturday's meet is but the first of the annual intercollegiate track meets participated in by every College and University in South Carolina. There is no bet ter way for football candidates to take their spring training and to keep in the pink of condition than by donning a track uniform in the Spring. Our own Alex Waite, was the individual star of the meet with 13 points. He won first place in the shot-put, second in the dis cus, and first in the javelin throw, coming within a very few feet of e(pualing the A. A. U. record in the javelin throw set ip at the Pennsylvania relay Carnival last Saturday, by hurling the jav elin 158.1 feet. We are expect ing Alex to hang up an American intercollegiate record in the jav elin before lie leaves Carolina. Burney Smith tied "Red" New man of Clemson for secondl place in individual p)oinlts, wvith 10 to his credlit. Ile wvon first place in the high jump, secondl in the broad junmp, andl third in the 440 yardl Haumptoni ran a close third for individual honors with () points. lie was fair ahead of the field in . lhe 120 yard high hurdles, and ran thle most beautiful race in ithis event ever seen on Univer sity' Field. In addition to taking .first p)lace in the High hurdles, "Hiamp"' was third in the 220 low Shurdles and fourth in both the shot put and javelin throw. ."Whiz" Stevens wvas an easy - wvinner of the 100 yard dash, do - ing the distance in 10 seconds flat, wvhich wvas unusually fast i time for a dirt track. - Other Carolinia men taking part r in the meet wvere Erwin, wvho won~ seconid an(l third1 n1)ac .. spectively in the high jump and pole vault; Parsons, who took third place in the half-mile and Refo and Mann. Wofford, with 18 points, came third in the meet, Citadel fourth with 12 and P. C. fifth with 3. Saturday night in Flinn Hall the track athletes were the guests at a sumptuous banquet, served by Carolina's fairest Co-eds. "Nuff sed." They enjoyed this wind up affair, rendered a la Car olina style immensely, and were unstinted in their praise of the hospitality shown them. Prof. J. O. Van Meter was toastmaster, and brief talks were made by 'Dean Baker, Coach Smathers, Captain Gilmer of Clemson, Mr. Irvine F. Belser, an alumnus of Carolina, Yale and Oxford, who spoke interestingly of the system of athletics in the English Uni versities as contrasted to our American system. The Haber nicht-McDougall trophy cup of fered to the winner of the meet, was presented to the Clemson team by "Greece" Graydon, prominent Columbia attorney, and an ex-football star at the University. After a series of cheers for the winners, the cur tain rang down on the first inter collegiate track meet ever held in South Carolina-a very suc cessful affair. Touchdown for Coach From an interesting letter from Coach Metzger to the Edi tor a few (lays ago enclosing an article for The Gamecock, the following extract is taken: "Ilow goes everything? I have never been so full of work before in my life. In the midst of it there was horn -a son on April 29th, Robert Andrews Metzger. Mot her and boy are fine. Give my very best regards to all the fellows and tell the football men to write mne. With kind personal regards. I am, Sincerely yours, Sol Metzger. Fifteen for Coach Metzger, fel lows.
