SOCIETIES. Euphradian. The usual meeting of the Euphradian Society was held on last Friday evening after a lapse of one meeting on ac count of the big Triangle De bate. Current events were read by L. W. Mahaffey and C. F. Bar lowe, weekly orator, made a strong appeal to his fellow stu dents to develop themselves to the highest possible degree in order that they may seize the opportunities that present themeslves in after life. W. F. Parker spoke on the indebtedness that each student bore to Carolina, and how it should be the constant endeav or of each man to do his duty by the institution at all times. The subject for debate was, "Resolved, That a board with compulsory powers be estab lished to censor women's dress." Messrs. Ard and Huck abee upheld the affirmative, while the negative was de fended by Messrs. Brooks Al ford and W. K. Suggs. Clariosophic. At the regular meeting of the Clariosophic Society on last Friday evening, the following program was carried out: Declaimers, W. N. Allsbrook and N. W. Beckham; Current Events, R. E. Brunson; orator, J. C. Hooks. Debate: "Resolved, That the C>vernor of South Carolina should not have the pardoning power." J. W. Jennings and H. F. Lee argued the affirma tive, being opposed by H. U. Sharpe and C. S. Chewning on the negative. The committee on debate rendered a decision in favor of the negative. Impromptu debate: "Re solved, That membership to the Literary Societies should be compulsory." Affirmative, Cole man Karesh and J. L. Fleming; negative, Sparkman and S. D. Ervin. Persons not otherwise eli gible for appointment, or in doubt as to their eligibility, may become eligible by appointment or enlistment in the National Guard, by enlistment in the En listed Reserve Corps or by ap pointment in the Officers' Re serve Corps. Applications for appointment in the Officers' Re serve Corps should be addressed to the adjutant general of the army and will be promptly acted I upon if it is stated that appoint ment in the Officers' Reserve Corps is desired to beconie eligi ble for final examination for ap pointment in the Regular Army. The application for appointment in the Officers' Reserve Corps should state whether or not the applicant has taken the prelimi nary examination and the result thereof if known. 5. There is no published list ed by the Secretary of War grad of technical institutions approv ed by the Secretary of War grad uation from which confers eligi bility for appointment. In gen eral, approved institutions will be those maintaining the full equivalent of a four year course of instruction in technical or sci entific subjects, the successful completion of which course en ititles the graduate to a degree in a recognized technical science. There will not be approved schools, colleges or universities giving abbreviated technical or non-technical degrees. Any can didate who has graduated from, or who will graduate within six tion from a technical course in any recognized college, univers ity or technical school, may, for the purpose of taking the final examination, be considered eligi ble for appointment. Upon re ceipt of examination reports in individual cases decision will be made by the Secretary of War whether or not the institution and the course therein are ap proved as making the candidate eligible for the appointment wvhich he seeks. 6. There will be a preliminary examination and a final examina tion. The former will be held as soon as practicable after the receipt of application and will take place at the most conveni ent military station near the home or place of residence of the applicant. This examination is for the purpose of thoroughly in forming the applicant and de terminin g whether or not he pos sesses physical and other quali fications which would justify his proceeding with the final exam ination. The final examination consists of (a) A basic, mental, moral, physical and professional exami nation which is the same for all branches of the service andi (b) Such additional mental and professional examinations or other requirements, as are pre scribed to determine fitness for appointment in the various branches. 7. Applications will be made on a prescribed form which may be obtained from the adjutant general of the army or any mili tary station. They should be submitted without delay at any military post or station, or at the headquarters of the corps area or department in which the can didate resides. Applicants will merly cause delay and possible loss of their applications by for warding them direct to the adju tant general of the army. 8. Information relative to the scope and details of the examina tion are contained in regulations now being distributed by the War Department. 9. It is particularly desired to obtain young college graduates of technical institutions for the infantry. Appointments for suc cessful candidates will be made about July 1st, thus permiting seniors in colleges and universi ties to obtain their degrees. There are about 1,000 vacancies in the grade of first lieutenant to be filled to which any caridi date may aspire. Whether or not he will reach this grade im mediately will entirely depend upon his standing in the basic final examination. 10. Every effort should be made to explain to prospective candidates the advantage of the infantry service with the idea of having as many as possible wish to become infantry officers.
