Carolina's delegation is very enthusiastic over the results of the Volunteer Conference in Anderson last week. Let's make the coming Blue Ridge event an even more successful one. Do you go to Sunday school? One has nothing to lose and much to gain by forming the habit of going regularly. We believe you will agree with us. The University has benefited greatly in having the Classical Association wit hus last week. Every student who heard these distinguished men klow that such an occasion is indeed a rare one. Fifteen for Major Caldwell! You bet they were loud and strong, too. Our hats are off to you, Major. Carolina will always feel her indebtedness to you. Again we would urge all those intending entering de bating preliminaries to begin early. Success can only be ob tained by so doing. How do you stand on the rec ords of the literary society to which you belong? Are you behind in dues, or are you ab -sent quite frequently? If so, perhaps you had better inves tigate. Both societies are pass ing active measures dealing with delinquencies, and if you delay you may be embarrassed by the action they may take. A word to the wise is sufficient. SUCCESSFUL DEBATERS. We wish to congratulate that member of the freshman class who by early and thorougi preparation won for himself a place on 1the big triangle debat ing team. Never before in the history of debating at the Uni versity has a -first-year man_ won such distinction. This should certainly be an impetus to freshmen to 'strive to attain recognition of their abilities. The subject of debates has been brought before the stu dent body time and again thru The Gamecock, and by other ways, and an urgent plea was made for early preparation, on the part of those entering the contests. Some heeded the ad vice given and were successful. Juniors and Seniors delayed until the last moment, and then undertook to win the prelimi nary by impromptu speeches. The results are well known. It seems to us it is high time we realize that debates are not won by a few minutes prepara tion. Careful and systematic work is necessary to enable one to win these contests, and as long as freshmen are impressed with this fact while upper classmen are not, these first year men will continue to win, and rightly so. Other preliminaries will be held within a short time to se lect varsity debaters who will represent the University against some of the strongest debating teams in the country. It remains to be seen what the results of these preliminaries will be. The man best prepar ed will win, be he Freshman or be he Senior. LOYALTY. Remarks are made from time to time by students who come t$ the University from other institutions tending to dis count Carolina spirit as com pared with that of the college from which they came. We have just one word to say to those who insist on maintaining such an attitude. As long as any man is a stu dent here his full allegiance is due Carolina, and if this insti tution is not as good as the one he attended before coming here the thing to do is either to go back to that institution or do all he can to make Carolina just as good. The least he can do is to knock. Perhaps college spirit at Car olina isn't just what it is at oth er institutions. Is there any wonder that such is the case when our own students receive instruction here, but are more loyal to other colleges. It seems to us that if a man is will ing to accept the instruction of fered by this University he should be willing to promote a t,rue Carolina spirit above all others. Our observation has been that most men coming here from other colleges do catch the real spirit that has made Carolina so dear to all of us. However, there are a few who are slow to realize that co operation is the means by which this spirit is perpetuated. Perhaps these few have been thoughtless, but in any event let's pull toget'her for a greater and better Carolina. THIRTEEN BIG MISTAKES IN LIFE, Judge McCormick, of Sar Francisco, says there are 18 mistakes of life: 1. To attempt to set up your own standar Is of right and wrong. 2. To try to measure the en joyment of others by your own. 3. To expect uniformity of opinions in this world. 4. To fail to make allow ances for inexperience. 5. To endeavor to mould all dispositions alike. 6. Not to yield to unimport ant trifles. 7. To look for perfection in our own actions. 8. To worry ourselves and others about what cannot be remedied. 9. Not to help everybody, wherever, however, and when ever we can. 10. To consider anything im possible that we cannot our selves perform. 11. To believe only what our finite minds can grasp. 12.
