FAMOUS SOL METZGER WILL COACH CAROLINA (Continued from Page 1.) he directed the play of Baylor University, Texas, after a dis tinguished football and track career at the University of Penn sylvania where he was captain of his freshman team and played three years on the varsity. He prepped at Andover where he first attracted attention as a track star. In 1908 he went back to his alma mater as coach and de veloped one of Penn's best teams, turning out an undefeated outfit and taking two ancient rivals, Michigan and Cornell, into camp. In 1909 he explored the West to coach the Oregon Aggies, but 1914 found him back in the East in charge of the University of West Virginia, where he remain ed in 1915. The next two years he was coach at Washington and Jefferson, his success at West Virginia also attending him in the camp of the Mountaineers' rivals. Incapacitated for active mil itary service by an old injury to his leg, during the war he became Y. M. C. A. recreational director at Camp Dix. When he was demobilized he went to Union College, Schenectady, N. J., to join the faculty there as director of physical training. Metzger, in addition to being a thoroly efficient coach, is a newspaper man of parts. He is head of the Metzger newspa per syndicate and has been a recognized authority as a writer on sports since he began to write signed articles on football for the New York Tribune short ly after leaving college. His stories of sport are now appear ing in two score newspapers. The signing of Metzger is be lieved to mean a great step for ward in football and athletics in general at the University of South Carolina. The alumni of the University have been formed into a machine like or ganization and as a result have signed a coach said by expert football men to be one-two-three among the coaches of the coun try.
