CAROLINA WINNER BY SMALL MARGIN. Gamecocks Down West End by Lone Point, 25 to 24. Carolina put an end to its losing streak last Saturday night when it defeated the West End Athletic Club of Charleston at basketball by the score of 25 to 24. The Game cocks were substantially in the lead until the latter part of the game, when the Charleston team came dangerously near overtaking them, as is shown by the closeness of the score. In view of the fact that it was their eighth contest in the last nine days, the Varsity quintet played a good game. By win ning this game, the Gamecocks made it an even break in Charleston, as they lost to the Citadel on the previous night. The Cockerels had the edge all during the game, the score being 14 and 11 at the end of the first half. In the first part of the second period the Var sity gained a good lead on West End, but the latter got on its feet in the last part cf the period and ran their tAtal number of points up to 24, the end of the contest finding the score 25 and 24 in the favor of the Gamecocks. Groups will be divided into the following: One class West DeSaussure, East l)e Saussure, West Rutledge, East Rutledge, Pinkney and Le garec, Harper and Elliott, and Woodrow, 3 classes in Thorn well. The best men on the campus have been selected as leaders, and they are some leaders. The leaders them selves will try to deepen the wells of their knowledge by~ sitting at the feet of Dr. Reovis,I of the Columbia Theological Seminary. From next Friday on the groups will meet once a week at 7 .'clok. LIBRARY ASSOCIATION PLANS NEW PROGRAM Would Provide Books for Ev ery American as Means of Combating Unrest. "R. M. Kennedy, librarian of the University of South Caro lina, has been selected chair man for South Carolina in the "Books for Everybody" cam paign to be instituted soon by the American Library Associa tion. In view of the widespread lack of libraries thruout the country, the American Li brary Association is planning this campaign for $2,000,000 to carry on an enlarged pro gram with the idea of making books accessible to every man in the country. The chief ob .jectives to the accomplished thru the proposed program are: 'The promotion of na tionwide educational and con stitutional progress to treat the present disorders and so cial ills with a generous dose of the right kind of books; the promotion of the better kind of citizenship; the extention of library service; more books for blind ; increased support of ex isting libraries; the organiza tion of more technical insti tutes and the providing of good book service for the merchant marine. The new program will be broad in scope and carried out with the cooperation of all libraries and library associa tions with the idea of giving an impetus to library develop ment, which will eventually provide books. for all Ameri cans. Another important ob ject of the plan is the provid ing of training in citizenship which will normally follow the free circulation of good books. The campaign to raise the necessary funds for the gig antic program will not be of the intensive "drive" type, present plans being to pledge the full amount by next sum mer, the collection, however, being distributed over three years." Mr. Kennedy was the repre sentative of the American Li brary Association throughout the war period in raising ininds and securing gifts of books in the "Hooks for Sol (iers" campaigns. He is now agent for the as-i sociation in the distribution of the left-over war service books in South Carolina as we noted in our last issue. Within the past few days 50t cases, containing 4,500 vol umes, have come and are now stored in the Library Annex. As soon as they can be class ified and gotten in shape, with student help, Mr. Kennedy willthe begin the work of distributing them where, in his judgment, Football Teams they will do most good.
