PLANS OF Y. M. C. A.
ADOPTED BY BOARD
Year's Work Outlined and
Proposed Budget Accepted
Plans for the work of the
Y. M. C. A. this year were pre
sented to the board of directors
by Mr. Bell at a meeting held
last Friday night. The report
was accepted with several
amendments. It follows in
part:
"Spirit and Leadership-.
The members of the Y. M. C.
A. and especially of the council
should not let any group of
men surpass them in interest I
in all college activities and in
their loyalty to Carolina and to
the support of all things that
will go to help the University.
Therefore it is the purpose of
the Cabinet to select a council
%to be composed of men repre
senting every group and every
,class on the campus, men who
;will be the natural leaders of
the college and who will have
-the spirit to boost Carolina at
dall times and stamp out any
embryo attempts to spread
strife and factionalism among
the students.
Social Work-B. E. Little
field, chairman. The social
conimittee will in no way con
flict with the social cabinet but
will co-operate with them,
making it their special duty to
obtain. the kinds of clean so
cial functions in which .every
student can have a share. The
following socials are planned:
Freshman Reception, Fresh
man Banquet, Thanksgiving
Social, George Washington S.o
cial, May Day Social.
Membership.-F. H. Cor
ley, Chairman. Membership
shall be extended to all mem-I
bers of the faculty and student
body who are in sympathy with
the aims of the association and
are willing to co-operate in its
work. By order of Mr. Strat
ton of 'the Columbia Y. M. C. A.
all members of the student as
sociation wil be granted full
membership to the city Y. M.
C. A. for $5.00.
Religious Work. - J. S.
Mears, Chairman. It will be
the policy of the religious work
committee to secure as inter
- esting speakers for the Wednes
day meetings as are possible.
Men like Dr.- Clinkscales, Dr.I
Snyder, Dr. E. P. Pressley, Dr.
H. A. Porter, Dr. W. D. Weath
erford and others. Besides the
speakers on distinctly religious
subjects it is planed to have aI
speaker once per month on
current topics, on missionary
work and -onferenes on su
dent problems to be led by stu
dents.
Bible Study.-.Mr. J. P. Sif
ford,- Chairman. The cabinet
feels that the Bible study work
is.one of the most vital on the
campus. The plan is to have
one class for each tenement to
be led by students in most cases
and by interested faculty mem
bers. The -teachers are to
meet once per week to go over
the problems of the 'lesson to
gether. The classes shall run
for only ten weeks, beginning
the first of October and run
ning to the Christmas holidays.
In order to stimulate interest
the cabinet would like to offer
to each man who does not miss
a class a supper banquet. The
text contemplated is "Christian
Standards of Life."
Chapel Co-operation.-It is
the purpose of the organiation
to operate with the chaplin in
every way possible to make
chapel more interesting. This
can be done by organizing and
supplying occasional speakers.
orchestra and choir and by
Social Service - R C.
Thompson, Chairman. The
committee has planned to work
with Mr. Gordon in the mills to
teach Bible class and lead Boy
Scouts, etc. Some work is
planned for the negroes of the
community and for the news
boys, such work to be determ
ined as soon as conditions are
better known."
The proposed budget as pre
sented by Mr. Bell was adopted
without amendment, as were
the recommendations of the
cabinet. With the year's work
outlined and with the hearty
co-operation of the student
body in view it would seem
that the Y. M. C. A. is facing
its greatest career since it first
became an organiation *at the
University.
