SIMS CHOSEN CAPTAIN OF BASEBALL Star Member of Basketball Team to Head Gamecocks. L. H. Sims has been elected captain of the baseball team for 1919. He was a member of the 'varsity team in 1916 and 1917, and his work for those two sea sons established a record for him in Carolina circles. Be sides two years of 'varsity base ball, Sims has played basket ball three years, tennis three, and scrub football one, since en tering college. His ability to captain our promising team is unquestionable. Lana was only recently dis charged from the army, where he was a lieutenant in the coast artillery. A dance was given in the University gymnasium last night by the Athletic Associa tion for the benefit of the base ball fund. There was a very nice crowd of students and young ladies present, and all seemed to enjoy the evening of dancing. Music was furnished by Hall's Orchestra. These dances will be given every Fri day night until it is announced otherwise. On the straw ride last Tues day night one of the young la dies lost a diamond brooch and one of our professors lost his reputation (so he says). BUY W. S. S. BASEBALL PRACTICE BEGINS AT CAROLINA (CONTINUEI) FltwO P.E ONE Skinner, "Toots" Waring and Cloyd will possibly do most of the hurling. Skinner and War ing are two good men, and Coach is relying upon them with the aid of Cloyd and oth ers who may venture to try the mound position, to keep the op posing batters guessing. Several of last year's scrubs and new men are showing up well in the outfield. Hyde, Smith, Kirby Smith, Langston, Allen, Brockinton, Fair, Quat tlebaum, Crockett and Coker are chasing the long ones for an outfield position. Coach is a little worried over the receiving end of the game. "Coley" Seaborn, a good handler of the big mit, and who was not at all slow on the bases during 1918, has not been discharged from the navy.
